A Day in the Life of Teresa Alvarado

Fall 1995

This entry was created under the previous format and will be updated soon to reflect the other "Day in the Life" entries. This entry reflects a glimpse of Teresa's daily work.

Well, things are getting busier and busier - almost scary. I have been working on my portion of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Services Office WWW Home Page. The URL is: [ http://snowhite.arc.nasa.gov ]. I've learned how to convert my Word documents to Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) and then format them. I'm doing this for the environmental newsletter which I've been publishing here at Ames since late last year: Eco-Notes.

Also, I have my big project of the year winding down - the Environmental Justice Implementation Plan. I have done almost all of the work for it, though a bit more research still needs to be done including checking out some more census maps and income data for area residents. The plan addresses environmental impacts caused by our operations or potential accidents which would "disproportionately impact low-income or minority communities." It's been such an interesting process: characterizing the surrounding community, assessing our impacts, and developing a program to respond to those communities and work to achieve environmental equity - meaning that residents are equitably protected from and informed about environmental risks. So, that plan needs to be to NASA Headquarters by November 1st and it still has to go through several rounds of internal reviews before then.

Plus, in the next couple of months I will be getting a new assignment. I will be aupplementing another program in this office: the environmental training program. I am supposed to work on my current duties 1/2 time and the new duties 1/2 time. So I ask myself, "How am I going to fit into 20 hours what I currently do in 40?!" Well, I just have to make sure that I finish up some of the big projects I am currently working on so that I can make room for the new stuff. It will be a challenge, but an interesting one.

To top it off, I will be moving to a new building at the end of next week! As if things weren't busy enough, I have to move too! Yuck, what a chore! So, that's the latest craziness. Just gotta keep myself together by staying focused and making sure I continue working out and seeing friends so that I don't become a slave to work.
