Space Center, a position she assumed in November 1995. She manages a staff
of 16 in disseminating information to worldwide news media organizations
about KSC's and NASA's multifaceted programs.
Her responsibilities include managing media activities surrounding launches,
landings, astronaut activities and other high profile events. Malone is
responsible for all printed information, video releases, news conferences,
official still photography and production of live coverage of KSC launches,
landings and press conferences. She oversees activities of various motion
picture and television crews which shoot film footage to create NASA-KSC
related feature films, documentaries and news shows with diverse audiences.
She advises NASA management on public affairs issues and policy; serves
as launch commentator for Space Shuttle launches, expendable launch vehicles
including Atlas, Delta and other rockets. Lisa also serves as a spokeswoman
for KSC; coordinates and moderates news conferences. "When the media or
public need any information about the Center, they come to me and my staff
of 16. The demand for information, from kids working on reports to TV
news crews, far exceeds what we can provide. Prior to that position, she served as the News Chief in the Media Services Branch, since March 1993, where she was responsible for assigning and editing news releases, fact sheets, press kits, public affairs plans and status reports. She also served as the lead Space Shuttle public affairs representative for five years. In that capacity, she tracked the processing activities of NASA's four Space Shuttles and provided status information on a daily basis to news media. Prior to that, she served as the editor of the in-house newsletter "Spaceport News" for 3 years. Malone received the NASA Silver Snoopy award, given by the Astronaut corps, in 1990. In 1996, she earned the distinction of Certified Public Relations Counselor, and in 1992, she became certified as an Accredited Public Relations Professional, both conferred by the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA). She joined NASA in May 1984 following graduation from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with a bachelor's degree in journalism. She worked in KSC's Information Office as a co-op student during her undergraduate studies. " I did an internship here in college and was dazzled by the cutting edge technology and thrilling launches, so I stayed on full time after graduation." Malone received her master's degree in management from the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Fla., in August 1995. She has completed executive development courses at Harvard and Penn State.
Born in Mobile, Ala., she now lives on Merritt Island, Fla. Archived Chats
