Bienvenidos and Welcome to today's Women of NASA Chat with Fanny Zuniga
from NASA Ames Research Center! Fanny spends most of her time conducting
experiments and studying data to help build better airplanes and space
vehicles. She is currently working with a group on the High-Speed Research
project. Their goal is to build a new High-Speed Civil Transport, capable
of carrying up to 300 passengers and flying at about twice the speed of
today's commercial transports. Fanny's role on the project is to help
develop and test technology for good performance during takeoff, approach
and landing. Additionally, she is responsible for evaluating the flight
performance of model aircraft tested in the windtunnels at Ames Research
Center.

And now, here is Fanny Zuniga to answer your questions.
[ FannyZuniga - 5 - 13:11:19 ]
RE: [Room16Montgomery] What country in Latin America
are you from, and how old were you when you came to the U.S?
My family is from Peru. My parents and sister were born in Peru but I
was born in New Jersey.
[ FannyZuniga - 7 - 13:14:54 ]
RE: [Ana] Buenos dias de Hawaii. Que hace ud para
probar de qualificar para ser "astronaut"?
Hola. Mucho gusto de hablar con ustedes. Yo tengo 10 aņos trabajando como
ingeniera aeroespacial en la NASA. Tambien tengo un Masters en ingenieria
aeroespacial. Esto me qualifica para poder ser astronauta.
[ FannyZuniga - 11 - 13:18:34 ]
RE: [Rethya-MissHimmel/StoreyElementarySchool]
Do you have kids? If you do, do they want to be like you?
No, I don't have any kids but I have a nephew and niece that leave near
me. My nephew is 4 years old and he really enjoys learning about NASA
and space. It's too early to tell if he'll grow up to be like me. I don't
want to sway him too much. I just want him to grow up to do whatever he
wants.
[ FannyZuniga - 14 - 13:23:39 ]

[ FannyZuniga - 18 - 13:28:31 ]
RE: [Jenna-MissHimmel/StoreyElementarySchool]
How old were you when you started working at Nasa?
I started at NASA right out of college. I was 21 years old.
[ FannyZuniga - 21 - 13:31:49 ]
RE: [Liliana] What do you like best
about Nasa?
Hi Liliana, that's a nice name. It's my sister's name. There are lots
of things I like about NASA. I guess what I like best about NASA is that
it's a research organization with it's sole purpose to explore space and
improve science and technology to benefit the quality of life on Earth.
I think these are lofty goals and I am happy to serve my country in helping
NASA meet these goals.
[ FannyZuniga - 23 - 13:33:41 ]
RE: [Room16Montgomery] Have you been
to Peru? If so, how is it different from the U.S?
Yes, I've been to Peru. It's very different from the US. It's a very poor
country and you can tell the difference as soon as you step off the plane.
We take for granted all the things we have here in the US. Most of the
Latin American countries are very poor and don't have half the commodities
we enjoy here and take for granted on a daily basis.
[ FannyZuniga - 24 - 13:36:40 ]
RE: [Victoria] Why did you want to be
a Aerospace Engineer And when will the new spaceship come?
Since I can remember (2 or 3 years old), I always wanted to work for NASA.
I grew up when the Apollo program was big in this country and remember
watching the first men land on the moon. That really inspired me and ever
since then I knew that I wanted to contribute to the space program in
some way. When I was about 11 or 12, I learned what aerospace engineers
do and decided that that career was for me and would lead me to NASA and
it did.

RE: [Room16Montgomery-Mrs.OGuinn/MontgomeryElementary]
What do you like about working at NASA?
Room16, please see Fanny's answer to that question in her answer in Message
#21. Thanks!
[ FannyZuniga - 27 - 13:39:48 ]
[ FannyZuniga - 33 - 13:51:32 ]
RE: [Room16Montgomery-Mrs.OGuinn/MontgomeryElementary]
What college did you go to, and why did you pick that one?
I did my undergrad at Syracuse University and my Master's at University
of Southern California and I'm working on Ph.D. now at Stanford. I picked
Syracuse because it was a really good school in Aerospace Engineering.
[ FannyZuniga - 34 - 13:55:40 ]
