girls at sim center
Tues. October 5, 1999
11:45 p.m. - There are two things running through my mind right now. One, I can't believe I'm here. Two, I can't wait until I have the feeling of weight hit my eyelids. I'm so tired from traveling. I am in Houston, Texas just one day before meeting three women that are apart of American History and have achieved some of the highest goals. Just knowing that not many women my age have a chance like this makes me appreciate it even more. Well, it's time to get some sleep so I will continue tomorrow.

8:30 a.m. - Wheew, we're on our way! Right now we're going down Beltway 8 East trying to get a move on. We're running just a little late to the mercy of confusion, but that's OK because with an opportunity like this one anything that there will be time for will be well worth it. Confusion and chaos is always a factor when there's a specific agenda or schedule so I don't have any worries about us being late. The first thing on the agenda is the photo shoot that I can't wait for although I am not really the best with picture taking.

11:45 a.m. (At the Simulation Center) - Right now we're talking with Lisa Reed about the crew that she trains and the process that she goes through to train them. Lisa has the responsibility of preparing crews for all procedures & situations. In the simulator control room where Lisa and others work all errors can be evaluated/monitored and be recalled in the future to instruct the trainees on what improvements need to be done. Lisa is the reason that crews are ready for their mission in order to perform to the best of their abilities.

12:20 p.m. - Just had lunch, good old mess hall food. Since my last entry I have gone into the motion shuttle simulator were I can experience the feeling that each crew has during their training. The simulation is an imitation of what a real mission would be like. The experience was great because I was able to be a pilot, meaning I flew the shuttle. At first I was nervous because I had no idea what I was doing and I didn't want to make a mistake. It got comfortable after awhile, not including being upside down. This morning I said that even with the confusion things would go fine and I was right. Since morning the day has been getting even better. :-)
To be honest I thought that when I got to the space center I would see mainly white males and just a small percentage of diversity here and there, but I was completely wrong. As I walk through the halls of each building I am greeted with smiles from the faces of diverse and welcoming people. girls in mission control

3:25 p.m. Lisa Shore, a Flight Dynamic Officer just gave us a tour around the space center. We went to the International Space Station Control Center & the Shuttle Mission Control Center. Lisa has not only topped her abilities in her occupation but she has had to do it while having the responsibility of a decision maker and having people whose lives depend on her. Her next goal is to maybe strive for the Astronaut Flight Director position. I am happy and proud that a woman at such a young age has not only high goals but also she has accomplished enough to make more goals for herself.
