Bonnie
My life started out simply, as most lives do. I was born in a California
hospital in 1983, and, except for the occasional holiday jaunts, I've stuck
around in California ever since. I'm lucky enough to have three younger
siblings (one brother and two sisters) who have all helped to make me the
stubborn but persistent young woman I am today. My parents, of course, started
to prepare me for the "real world" from day one with the encouragement and
opportunities necessary to succeed. I've been lucky to attend excellent
schools which have contributed to my physical, emotional, spiritual and
academic development. I must say I am quite pleased with the way things
turned out!
To say more about myself, though, and not the generic stuff everybody gets to talk about, I have a high interest in science, sports, music, dance, and children. This may seem like a wide variety of interests, but my background has greatly contributed to the several interests I have. In grammar school, I played softball, volleyball, and basketball. I was Captain of the Cheerleading squad, the President of the Student Council, and a member of the choir. I also took advanced classes and tutored younger children. Babysitting has given me a great deal of exposure to the ways of children...boy, do I feel blessed. For the past six years, I have been working at my parents' dental office, which continually challenges me to deal with numerous personalities in diverse situations. I have been dancing for 5 years now, and it continues to be one of my main passions. I sing constantly - in the car, in the shower, in my room, at school, at the computer, and in my head. My father, brother, and I enjoy off-road vehicles tremendously and I'll hop into one any chance I can. I love wake boarding, knee boarding, water skiing, and boating, anything to get me cruising in the water! I have been a member of a competitive swim team for two years, and I have found that swimming is quite therapeutic, as well as an awesome workout! I discovered kickboxing last year, and I have found it's a great way to have fun and exercise. At present, I coach cheerleaders at my previous grammar school for community service. These fifteen girls make me smile every week, though it is quite a task! I attend an all-girl high school, and I have high hopes for attending UCLA, UCSD, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara University, or Stanford University. I'm maintaining a high grade point average while keeping up good relationships with my family and friends, which is important to me. This is my journey so far; heaven knows what's next! I am excited to serve on the Young Women of NASA Advisory Council because it will give me a chance to share my enthusiasm about life and learning with other young women. Although I have been lucky to have supportive parents I know there are many people who need extra encouragement that a great mentoring program can give. Right now I am working on interviewing NASA women and writing profiles to add to the project site. I am also working on reorganizing the profile page to make it easier to sort through all the woman who are involved. Although I went to the launch of STS-93 we left before the shuttle actually launched. The event was a thrilling experience for me but I certainly hope to get to see the actual lift off next time.
