RE: [amanuel-mrs.amanuel/ibm] hi...i am at work right

I assume you have interest in space science chats. Do you have interest in any
particular area?
[ JimThieman/Astronomer - 9 - 09:41:12 ]
RE: [amanuel-mrs.amanuel/ibm] i am basically interested
in the relation-ship between science and religion...i am from eritrea ..east africa...been
here for 11 years..i am currently studying mcse..and c ..but am very interested
in the universe..
If you have a particular interest in that area, I'd be happy to try to answer
your question. Although I'm not an expert in science and religion.

RE: [Lillian-Lillian/SJRMC] I am interested in the
planets visible in the night sky. I live in Oklahoma and notice what I think is
a planet in the Western sky. Can you provide information, please?
Welcome Lillian! Glad you could make it today to chat with Jim! He will answer
your question in just a moment...

RE: [Lillian-Lillian/SJRMC] I am interested in the

I believe what you are probably seeing is Venus which is very bright right after
sundown. I know Jupiter is in that area of the sky now too, but I haven't checked
on its' position lately.

RE: [amanuel-mrs.amanuel/ibm] what do u think about
about the following comparison heaven in the bible....is the universe ufo !.......flying
creatures....angels....created..found in heaven..universe dust of the earth.....chemicals...c
, o , fe , etc..[the writer did not know chemicals...] more to come
My own belief is that analogies can be made to the statements in the Bible in
comparison to things we know today, but the statements do not have to be literally
true. What is important is the underlying message to what they are saying. That
is the important part.
[ JimThieman/Astronomer - 15 - 09:52:24

RE: [amanuel-mrs.amanuel/ibm] and also is it true that
all the planets will allign in a straight line arround may 5 2000...and what is
the effect in terms of gravity,....etc to earth ?
The May 5 planetary alignment is a very rough alignment. I believe the planets
are all in the same quarter of the sky. Even with a perfectly straight alignment,
however, the gravitational effect on the Earth would be minuscule in comparison
to that of the Sun and the Moon.

Mrs. Amanuel: It looks as if you are the only person in the chat room today, other
than Jim and myself! We're glad you're here! I will keep the room openfor another
six minutes (until the top of the hour) and then I will close it down. If you
have a couple more questions you'd like to ask Jim, please send them now. Thanks
:-)
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 20 - 09:58:21 ]
RE: [Lillian-Lillian/SJRMC] Thank you for this opportunity.
I enjoyed our brief conversation and look forward to "chatting" again.
Hi Lillian: Don't leave just yet! Jim is still here and will answer your question
about recommended books. If you have a couple more questions you'd like to ask,
go ahead and send them in. The reason i was closing the chat room down early is
because there are only two chatters. But if you have another couple ?'s we'll
take them :-)

RE: [Lillian-Lillian/SJRMC] Are there books you recommend
for amateur star watchers which would include constellation and planet positions
in relation to seasons?
The "Observer's Guide to the Stars and Planets" is the one I would most recommend
since it is a very good reference for locations as well as star positions, constellations,
etc. I'm trying to remember the author's name and it begins with a "P", but it
escapes me at the moment. The book is part of a series, however, such as the "Field
Guide to Trees", one on insects, etc. It's available in most bookstores.

RE: [AstroTeam/JJFrayElem-ShuttleBoys/J.J.FrayElem.]
Jim, Are there volcanoes on Jupiter? If so, how big are they? And what year was
Jupiter found?
Jupiter is a planet that's covered entirely in gas, so we don't know what's happening
at the solid surface deep within. We do know that there are volcanos on one of
the moons of Jupiter called Io.
[ Sandy/NASAChatHost - 41 - 10:09:52 ]
RE: [Lillian-Lillian/SJRMC] signing off. thank you.
GOODBYE LILLIAN, thanks for joining us :-) Please take a minute to fill out the
short survey form I mentioned above. Also check out our Quest schedule of events

RE: [AstroTeam/JJFrayElem-ShuttleBoys/J.J.FrayElem.]
What do you think that is making the radio waves from Jupiter? Does the volcano
on Io spit lava?
We are quite sure that charged particles like electrons and protons moving in
the magnetic field of Jupiter cause the radio emission. That's the nature of what
charged particles do. The volcanos definitely spew out some kind of lava since
we see lave pools in recent pictures that weren't there before. The question is
what the lave is made of. It might be somewhat different from what we see on Earth.

RE: [AstroTeam/JJFrayElem-ShuttleBoys/J.J.FrayElem.]
Sorry it is taking so long to send our questions but the computer is taking forever
to send our question! Do you think that Jupiter's moons have any ocean water?
We believe it is quite likely that another of the moons of Jupiter, Europa, has
ice on its surface, and probably a lot of water underneath, perhaps in a liquid
form like an ocean. Don't worry about the slowness of your computer. It takes
me a while just to type. I never claimed to be a good typist.
[ JimThieman/Astronomer - 51 - 10:22:58
]
RE: [AstroTeam/JJFrayElem-ShuttleBoys/J.J.FrayElem.]
What do you think about the talk on Pluto? Do you feel it should be called a planet
or do you think it could be another moon?
I was raised thinking of Pluto as a planet and I'd like to keep thinking of it
that way. It's got a different type of orbit from the other planets, and was probably
created in a different way from the other planets, but it's big enough and enough
like the other planets for me to want to call it a planet.
[ JimThieman/Astronomer - 54 - 10:28:50
]
RE: [AstroTeam/JJFrayElem-ShuttleBoys/J.J.FrayElem.]
Do you think that Mars could have life on it or do you that Jupiter is a better
planet to have life on it? Would you like to go to either planet? I'm sure with
your glasses it would work now.
Mars is certainly a better place for life as we know it than Jupiter is. Jupiter
is colder and has a very large amount of gravity that would flatten us if we went
there. It may very well be possible that life existed on Mars at one time or maybe
even now. MY guess is that it would be very primitive life like single celled
animals. Yes, I would love to go to any planet. If Jupiter, I would want to go
to the moons so I would not get flattened. My glasses should not prevent me, but
they use that as one reason for choosing among the thousands of applications they
have to go into space.
