FIELD JOURNAL

My Duties at NASA Johnson Space Center

by Lonnie Moffitt
June 30, l997

On a daily basis at JSC, I attend a lot of meetings and write many reports about those meetings to my astronaut bosses. I am also assigned to Landing and Rollout, which is the reason I am at the Ames Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS). If there are any Landing and Rollout issues, then I report to the people who oversee those aspects.

I Work with All of the Astronauts

I work in the astronaut office with all of the astronauts. My boss, who happens to be a pilot who has flown and is preparing to be a commander on STS 90, is named Rick Searfoss. He is the Branch Chief over the Vehicle Systems Engineering Branch in the Astronaut Office at NASA Johnson Space Center. He has many astronauts and support personnel like myself working for him. Everyone has different duties. For example, some people work with the Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) and some with the Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs). Some astronauts work the Proximity and Rendezvous operations while others work with future Shuttle enhancements and even future vehicles not designed at this time. My area of responsibility is in Orbiter Systems, which are hardware systems onboard the Shuttle.
