Rifles for Rockets

by Kyle T., grade 6
West Middle School
May 13, 1998

On my trip to Kennedy Space Center I saw and learned many new things. The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is the second largest building in the world. I also learned that the Apollo space program landed us on the moon. The Apollo program had rockets from 1 to 17. There were going to be three more Apollo Missions, but because of the Vietnam War, money was taken away from the space program. Because Apollo 18 was never launched, we were able to see it on display at Kennedy Space Center. I found out Apollo 19 is at the other space camp we didn't go to in Alabama and Apollo 20 is at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Our teacher told us that we were lucky because the one we saw looks just like one that goes to space. The other two are just outside on the ground, not fixed up. The one we saw was all perfect and painted with wires and parts and everything.

We even got to see a space suit that Jim Lovell wore on Apollo 11. The legs and arms have a red stripe. That means he was the commander. The other guy had a suit with no stripe. That way the third guy looking at them could tell them apart.

I really liked the rocket garden. I got to walk on the metal part where Neil Armstrong walked to go to his space ship to the moon. The part where the three guys come back to Earth looked too little to me. I saw lots of other rockets that went to space.
