Rock and Roll!

by Jason, grade 6
West Middle School
May 13, 1998

Hi, my name is Jason. I'm 13 years old and I live in Colorado Springs. I am a student at West Middle School and I am in Mr. Weiner's Space Club. We came out to Florida to learn about space exploration in the future and past. So far I have learned that NASA has the second largest building in the world, that the crawler is this humongous tractor that takes 20 engineers to drive and takes the shuttle to the launch pad. We actually saw the crawler at the launch pad. It had just brought the Shuttle Discovery there a few days before. The crawler goes less than 1 mile per hour.It goes on this road that is very wide. It is made from white rocks from rivers in Alabama. The crawler powders the stones as it drives over it. We saw the powered rocks. It looked weird. The crawler weighs millions of pounds.

Kennedy Space Center only has two launch pads. We saw them both. One had Discovery on it and the other was empty. The launch pads are big.I found out that the shuttle can orbit the earth in 90 minutes and that it only takes eight minutes to get all the way into orbit. While we were in Florida, we also went to Race Rock, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Dixie Crossroads (a seafood restaurant), Epcot Center, Discovery Island and Disney Village. We also took an air boat ride, rode a trolley, rode in different boats, rode in tour buses, swam in a swimming pool and flew on four different airplanes.
