Meet: Dave McKenna
Assistant Superintendent
Indiana School for the Deaf
Who I am - words that describe me:
I am an inquisitive, sensitive, outgoing person with an adventurous spirit.
I enjoy meeting new people and learning from their experiences.
My personal challenges:
At age 43, I decided to pursue
one of my lifelong dreams of becoming a certified scuba diver.
My career challenges:
As a school administrator, I want the students to see that if you lead
a healthy and active life, you can continue to experience the adventures
of learning throughout your life.
My career:
I direct the daily operations of the Indiana School for the Deaf. This
includes managing the Business Office, Human Resources, Physical Plant,
Dietary Services, and Campus Police.
Influences:
When I was a very young supervisor in the Air Force, I was struggling
with my new responsibilities. A senior manager named Samuel Madison took
me under his wing and taught me that the most important resource a manager
has is "PEOPLE." He changed my perspective and helped me become a personable
manager.
Future goals:
After retiring from the Air Force in 1991, I embarked on a new career
with the goal of retiring to Florida at the age of 55. My wife, Susan,
and I are working towards that goal so we may enjoy early retirement in
the warm Florida sun.
My thoughts about space exploration:
Growing up in the 60s, I have watched the space program from its infancy.
As we look around us, space exploration has impacted nearly every aspect
of our daily lives, from Teflon to personal computers and so much more!
In 1984, I had the pleasure of meeting and escorting former astronaut
Charlie Duke on a tour of high school visits in Clearwater, Florida. At
that time, I was working as a recruiter for the Air Force. The experience
of meeting someone who has walked on the moon is something I will cherish
throughout my life.
Personal information:
My wife Susan and I enjoy camping, gardening, and scuba diving. We were
certified for scuba diving on our honeymoon in November 1996.
