Tom Whittaker and dinner as a group
by Kathy Sablan
Wednesday, September 30, 1998:
More of the same. Late afternoon took time out to watch Tom Whittaker's
ascent to the surface after a night underwater. We all gathered around
him while he was resting. We watched a video while he narrated about his
summit to Everest. Tom was very inspirational. One thing that sticks in
my mind from his talk is the fact that after all the schooling he got
he decided to do something that he liked to do that would make a difference
rather than going the route of making the big bucks which he could have
done with his background. Rather than wait for the world to invite him
into their world he decided to invite the world into his life. Tom lost
a foot and injured both knees when he was hit by a drunk driver.
Tonight I'm having dinner with the KSC folks so I can get to know them
better. We've all been working independently, and I haven't had time to
get to know these folks at all. I had set things up with Robin and told
the other folks whenever we saw them. The number of people interested
in going grew as the day went on so it was suggested that someone make
reservations at the restaurant. I went ahead and made reservations for
about 20 people. Low and behold 22 people showed up. Our group was large
and the seating arrangements were not very conducive for conversation
but I think I can safely say that a good time was had by everyone.
