Mandatory evacuation
by Kathy Sablan
Thursday, September 24, 1998:
Got a call at 7:30 a.m. from Krisstina telling me that we got the mandatory
evacuation orders from Ocean Reef Club. We planned to meet at check-out
at 9 a.m. Team members made needed calls to offices and families to inform
them of the evacuation order.
After a good breakfast we proceeded to caravan up to Kissimmee where
the Ocean Reef Club had secured hotel accommodations for us. Krisstina
and Karen in a van, followed by me in one car and Linda in another. Jennifer
buddied up in her car with Bonnie and Christopher in another car. We caravaned
up to Kissimmee. It is interesting to note that the traffic northbound
was very light. The weather was sunny and calm. Tolls were suspended on
the Florida turnpike.
As we approached the outskirts of Orlando it appeared as if it was business
as usual. There were construction crews working on the freeway, as if
it was just another day at work. Got to the hotel in Kissimmee around
3 p.m. After checking-in and getting unpacked we met as a group for a
discussion. At this point it was evident that I had to put on my Deputy
hat and try to keep the team working together until Rose could join us.
There was tension among the team members due to some miscommunications
and tension from the hurricane. I tasked all the team members to independently
make two assessments that we can present to Rose when we talked to her
on Friday evening.
Scenario #1 what can we do if we continue the mission dry? Can we run
the mission out of KSC or out of the hotel?
Scenario #2: what can we do if we are able to go back to Key Largo
on Monday and resume the mission?
Calls had to made to crew participating and logistical arrangements had
to be worked out. We decided to meet again around 10 in the morning to see
what everyone came up with. One thing was evident to me, whether it was
spoken or not Ð None of us on any of the teams wanted to abort the mission.
