You have to have a little fun
by Gail Hebert
September 30, l998
I began the day by hitting the water at 7:10 a.m. Our Chief Engineer,
Joe Bishop, and I have been enjoying a cup of fresh coffee in the morning
meetings. However, since Joe was the Mission Commander last night, he
spent the night underwater with Rod Roddenberry and Tom Whittaker. Not
wanting Joe to do without his morning cup, I cleared a "special deliver"
with Dennis and delivered a thermos of coffee to our overnight guests.
It was a tremendous hit and the guy greeted me with a smile! I also brought
them their breakfast. Who says NASA doesn't deliver! Mr. Whittaker requested
another thermos, which I promptly delivered. This time taking great care,
I put it on a leash around my neck (like a St. Bernard rescue dog) and
brought it that way. They laughed and took my picture. Sometimes you have
to have a little fun!
Dennis mentioned this morning in the meeting that we would begin wrapping
up and closing down the Station beginning on Saturday. I felt a little
lump in my throat when I realized the project was coming to a close. Just
when I have developed a system for taking a shower in a 20-inch square
shower stall and remember that insect repellent is the fragrance at night!
Since the hurricane, the mosquitoes have been brutal. I thought of counting
how many bruises I have. I decided to forgo that activity for another
day. I bruise rather easily and people wonder what happened to me! What
I wonder about is the webs that are beginning to develop between my toes!
