Weather watch
by Linda Conrad
September 23, l998
In case you've not been watching the weather reports, Hurricane Georges
seems to be headed our way. We are on a hurricane watch, which means (translation
for those of us not from this area) that a hurricane is expected to hit
between 36 and 48 hours from the 4:00 am hour in which this report was
made. They have initiated a scheduled evacuation beginning this morning
with the lower keys, and then working this way later. There is no forced
evacuation yet.
As a matter of fact we are experiencing the best weather we've seen
here yet. For my taste they could turn the humidity down a little, but
the sun is shining, skies are clear with a slight breeze to make the heat
tolerable. I think they call this the calm before the storm.
This mission features challenge, so we're going to proceed with today
as planned (though we may keep the chat room open and feature a few extra
folks who may not get their turn if we have to evacuate). So stay tuned.
I will try to keep you informed with a link at the top if I have phone
contact. Today we plan to proceed according to schedule. If there is
silence from here, assume we are on the road heading north to avoid the
storm.
There's a rumor afoot that NASA has gone on a lark to Key Largo, and
spending the time luxuriating. For some of us nothing could be further
from the truth! Robin took us on a tour of their facilities. Check it
out!
