Meet: Gail Hebert
Environmental Protection Specialist
Who I am - words that describe me:
I can be persistent. If I am involved with a project or mission, I am
passionate about completing it successfully.
My personal challenges:
I have always pursued lifelong learning. I have an out-of-control imagination
at times. I live life to its fullest every day.
My career challenges:
At one time, long ago, I was a successful real estate agent. Because of
my fascination with the space program, I resigned to work with NASA. I
changed career paths from business to technical and had to start over
again. Although it was difficult, the rewards have been wonderful. I have
had some incredible opportunities and experiences since I came to work
for NASA.
My career:
I have worked in the Environmental Program Office for almost four years
supporting five different groups during that time; Air, Solid Waste and
Innovative Technologies, Remediation, Natural Resources, and now Environmental
Management Systems. I am also responsible for archaeological and historical
management at KSC.
Likes/Dislikes about career:
I love working environmental programs for NASA. Many people do not realize
we operate such high-tech space programs on a wildlife refuge. It is very
challenging and keeps me busy! The only thing I would change is I would
have joined the military to become a pilot. Then I would have applied
to the Astronaut Corps. I have always wanted to be an astronaut. I think
they have about the coolest job in the world.
Influences:
I have an opportunity to work with some of the most brilliant minds in
the world. My older sister has always been a very influential person in
my life and has always encouraged me to reach for the stars. Dennis Chamberland
has become a very influential person in my life lately because he gave
me an opportunity last year to work with him, and I was hooked. He takes
the time to explain things to me in a way even I can understand. Robert
Crippen, one of the first Shuttle astronauts once told me it was refreshing
to meet someone who was more excited about his job than he was!
Future goals:
My only goal is to live a good life and maybe touch a few lives along
the way. I have always wanted to learn to fly.
My thoughts about space exploration:
I have been fascinated with the space program since I was young. The thought
of exploring the universe, and the possibilities that go along with that,
is very exciting to me.
Personal information:
I am married and have two kids. I also have a spoiled Golden Retriever,
two parrots, and a very old cat. Outside of work, my interests include
boating, SCUBA diving, and traveling. I am also an amateur photographer.
