Good morning, This chat room will be used to communicate with the Scott
Carpenter Space Analog Station. Please remember to refresh frequently to
follow the communication.
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 1 - 07:36:38 ]
Please stand by. The whole facility here lost power and it will take some
time for the Scott Carpenter Space Analog Station to power back up. They
have to leave power off for 5 minutes. We'll join you as soon as we can!
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 2 - 07:38:15 ]
Do let us know you're there, and go ahead with questions. We are going
to try to send you video at about 8:00PDT/ 11:00/EDT so you may want to
be sure you have RealPlayer downloaded. Instructions are on the bottom
of the page at: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/space/challenge/events/9-29.html
[ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 3 - 07:42:33 ]
We're back on line in the "dry" area of Key Largo's Marine Resources Development
Foundation. We did indeed loose power, but fortunately, the computer wasn't
fried. Who else is here today?
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 5 - 07:45:01 ]
RE: [Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC] Hi Linda, Good morning
from KSC. Tom
Good morning Tom. Always a challenge here! We working through powering
back the Station. Dennis is on the phone with Joe and Eugene Roddenberry.
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 7 - 07:45:51 ]
Sonya Renner is also in the Station ready to answer questions when the
power is back up.
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 8 - 07:47:25 ]
RE: [Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew] What's the topic
for this chat/cast?
The schedule says the topic is: Public Involvement in Space Exploration:
Media and the Message
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 12 - 07:51:45
]
As Dennis and I sit here communicating with the station through radio,
it becomes apparent that adding video this morning may complicate an already
pressured situation. We really do want you to at least be able to chat
with these folks!
[ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 13 - 07:56:53 ]
Sonya, can you tell us a little about what Space Center Houston is/does?
[ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 14 - 07:59:46 ]
RE: [ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 10 - 07:49:31 ] Hi
Krisstina, how are things on the west coast?
Hi Tom, actually, I'm on-site in Key Largo. We're having a beautiful day,
and just dealing with a few more "challenges" in the project. Is there
a method that you find successful in communicating space science to the
public?
[ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 15 - 08:05:20 ]
Krisstina, when opportunities arise, we try to take advantage of them
(teacher workshops, science fairs, etc.) and are sure to show the enthusiasm
we have for what we do. Most people have some level of enthusiasm for
the space program and we just need to nurture that and provide as much
information as is desired. Enjoy the warmer temps here in Florida!
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 16 - 08:06:06
]
Last word: They're here and ready to chat!
[ Station-STATION - 17 - 08:06:37
]
We finally made it. Sorry for the delay. We had some technical difficulties
while under the deep blue.
[ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 18 - 08:06:40 ]
In our work with students, teachers, and the general public, we often
find that it is the theme of exploration that first interests people and
then the science of how we actually live and work in space becomes important.
Tom, what are the students and teachers you work with most interested
in?
[ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 20 - 08:08:37 ]
We find that all aspects of space science (microgravity, life support,
astronomy, environment) fascinate students and teachers, more so that
the adventure (which is also important).
[ ROD-STATION - 21 - 08:08:58 ]
Well were sitting here at the bottom of the MRDF Lagoon. Looking out into
the green abyss (courtesy of Georges). Things are going well. How is everyone
out there?
[ Sonya-STATION - 23 - 08:11:16
]
RE: [ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 19 - 08:07:35
] Hi Sonya, Rod, glad you're here. What sorts of things do you do to communicate
space science to the public?
SpaceCenter Houston is the visitors center to Johnson Space Center in
Houston. We have educational programs, a curriculum based on using space
to teach, exhibits, films, NASA artifacts, and a lot of fun!
[ ROD-STATION - 25 - 08:13:14 ]
I work on the TV show called Earth: Final Conflict. In order to educate
the public/audience on Science relating things ideally we like to entertain
as well.
[ Sonya-STATION - 27 - 08:15:50
]
RD [ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 24 - 08:12:40
]
Sonya, what kinds of things do your visitors enjoy?
We have a lot of computer interactives, an area called Kids ;Space
Place that actually teaches concepts like robotics, gravity, etc. The
films are very popular including IMAX films, and a gallery area that showcases
the history of the American human space program. Tram tours to mission
control and the Neutral Buoyancy Lab are a big hit too!
[ Celeste-SCSAS/DryCrew - 28 - 08:16:07 ]
Rod, who participates in your website, and what is the "philosophy" of
your mission?
[ ROD-STATION - 29 - 08:17:42 ]
RE [ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 26 - 08:14:13
]
Rod, how much science information is brought into your television program,
ie do you have to have consultants or do any research in order to make
sure the science is somewhat realistic?
On Star Trek, There are numerous Science Consultants. In my opinion they
stay fairly true to Science. Whenever the need to create something the
refer to one of thier Science Consultants to make sure that what they
are creating is not IMPOSSIBLE, just not YET achievable.
[ ROD-STATION - 32 - 08:19:11 ]
On Earth: Fianl Conflict, They have choose a direction that is less reliant
on the known Science giving them more freedom, in a sense, to create.
[ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 31 - 08:19:08 ]
Do you get to join in the creative process of what is not impossible,
but potentially achievable??
[ Celeste-SCSAS/DryCrew - 33 - 08:20:20 ]
What kind of training does it take to be a science consultant on Earth:
Final Conflict?
[ Sonya-STATION - 35 - 08:21:54
]
RE[ Krisstina-SCSAS/DryCrew - 30 - 08:17:58
]
Sonya, you mentioned the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, is that something that
visitors can actually get wet in? How did you do yesterday in establishing
your "neutral buoyancy?"
Visitors can view training and activities in the NBL from a catwalk but
do not get into the pool. Astronauts train there for extravehicular activities,
to rehearse a spacewalk, since underwater is the closest approximation
on Earth to weightlessness. Bruce Willis filmed part of Armageddon in
the NBL. I did pretty good in my underwater activities yesterday.
[ ROD-STATION - 36 - 08:23:00 ]
RE [ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 22 - 08:10:40 ]
Doing fine. How do the plants look today?
Tom, sorry for the delay, the plants look good to me. Sonya is
not so sure of the dead bees. Why are they there? How can they pollinate?
[ ROD-STATION - 37 - 08:24:38 ]
RE [ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 34 - 08:20:52 ]
Rod, do your writers pull ideas out of stories from the old masters such
as Heinlein, Asimov, etc.?
Tom, That's a good question, I do not really know if they get ideas from
the greats? I can recognize a few things but usually it is from a movie
that I saw.
[ ROD-STATION - 38 - 08:25:51 ]
Celeste, You really have to know someone on the top. Actually, training
for what I do requires mostly passion for what you do and the desire to
persist with ideas.
[ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 39 - 08:25:55 ]
RE: Rod's Sonya is not so sure of the dead bees. Why are they there? How
can they pollinate?
The "bee-sticks" are for the crew to pollinate the flowers when/if they
appear. Bees are perfectly suited for this activity! They just need to
be rubbed against one flower and taken to a flower on another plant. These
plants cannot accept pollen from a flower on the same plant, so must be
cross pollinated.
[ ROD-STATION - 40 - 08:29:01 ]
I would like to one-day create a TV show that educates while entertaining.
I really enjoy the shows that leave you with an Idea or new point of view
that makes you say "Wow, I never thought of it that way?" This is my goal.
[ Celeste-SCSAS/DryCrew - 41 - 08:29:48 ]
Rod, will we see killer bees cross pollinating some alien plants on a
future episode of EFC?
[ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 42 - 08:30:46 ]
Sounds like a story line to me!
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 43 - 08:30:52
]
The scheduled time for this chat is over, however because we began late,
I'm wondering if our experts are willing to remain online a bit longer?
If there are more questions, this is the time to put them up.
[ Sonya-STATION - 44 - 08:31:33
]
Space Center Houston, the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, and Boeing are undertaking
a three-year project to follow the development of ISS. It will include
a model of ISS in 60 different science centers aacross the country, along
with programs and training for the centers' eductors. It is a great "to
be continued...." story.
[ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 46 - 08:31:35 ]
Sonya, what are some of the partnerships that you have developed at JSC?
[ Sonya-STATION - 47 - 08:32:52
]
Sure, fire the questions. (Just so long as these bees don't come to life)
[ Sonya-STATION - 49 - 08:34:47
]
RE [ Rose-SCSAS/DryCrew - 45 - 08:31:33 ]
Sonya, how do you choose displays to go in the Space Center, and how long
does it take to develop them?
Space Center Houston and JSC have partnerships with a lot of schools and
youth groups like boy and girl scouts and civil air patrol. A group of
fourth graders comes to the Center every week for their science class.
NASA scientists work with the programs to insure accurancy. Corporations
and foundations support programs and exhibits.
[ Sonya-STATION - 50 - 08:35:47
]
RE [ Rose-SCSAS/DryCrew - 48 - 08:34:09 ]
Sonya, do you have a relationship with a National Space Biomedical Research
Institute?
No, we don't as far as I know. We probably should!
[ ROD-STATION - 53 - 08:40:01 ]
On Earth Final Conflict, We suggest that Aliens, Called Taelons, have
come to earth in a gesture of peace. WE also claim that they have solved
many of the worlds diseases as well as hunger and other social ills that
we suffer from in this day. Would the solving of these "ills" truely help
Humankind or just create a society that is ignorant of our potential self-destruction?
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 54 - 08:40:26
]
RE: [KrisstinaCelesteandRose-SCSAS/DryCrew]
We're signing off from the dry side Challenge Mission participation-
Thanks for joining us.
[ ROD-STATION - 56 - 08:41:25 ]
RE [ Tom/KSC-Tom/KSC - 51 - 08:36:38 ]
Rod, any plans for a movie in the future?
Tom, I don't really have the experience YET to put a Feature Film
together, but when I do, believe me it will happen.
[ Sonya-STATION - 57 - 08:42:30
]
See ya!
[ ROd-STATION - 58 - 08:43:15 ]
Thank You all very much for Joining us in the Scott Carpenter Analog Station!!!!
[ Linda/NASAQuest - 59 - 08:45:48
]
Thanks Sonya and Rod for joining us despite the power difficulties! Keep
up the good work getting that science communicated!
