QUESTION: What happens to Cassini after it completes the Saturn tour? ANSWER from FAQ on June 11, 1999: Physically, the spacecraft will find itself orbiting Saturn. If all goes well during the mission, there should be enough attitude-control fuel and power for the spacecraft to continue to take data and relay it back to Earth for many years (just as Magellan did and Voyager still does). However, budget constraints may limit how long we are allowed to operate the spacecraft after the end of the nominal mission. Cassini will continue to orbit Saturn until the spacecraft runs out of attitude control fuel. Although no definite decisions have yet been made, it is planned that before it runs out of propellant, Cassini will be placed in an orbit that minimizes its chances of colliding with any of the satellites.
