QUESTION: What happens to Cassini after it completes the Saturn tour? ANSWER from FAQ on June 3, 1999: Physically, the spacecraft will find itself orbiting Saturn in a high-inclination orbit. If all goes well during the mission, there should be enough attitude-control fuel and power for the spacecraft to continue to take data and relay it back to Earth for awhile (just as Magellan did and Voyager still does). However, budget constraints may limit how long we are allowed to operate the spacecraft after the end of the nominal mission. Cassini will continue to orbit Saturn until the spacecraft runs out of attitude control fuel, allowing various perturbations to spin up the spacecraft and cause it to break apart. This termination is expected to take many decades.
