Meet: Donald G. James

Director/Chief
Education Branch
NASA Ames Research Center


Donald has been with NASA since 1982, when he participated in a NASA-sponsored internship program at Goddard Space Flight Center. Since then, he has served in different roles at GSFC and NASA Headquarters. His responsibilities in these roles have included significant involvement in or management of public affairs.

Since March 1999, Donald has been the education director at Ames Research Center. As education director, Donald is responsible for the center's education programs, including K-12, college and graduate.

Education
Donald graduated from the University of Southern California in 1979, with a B.A. in International Relations. He attended a summer session at Cambridge University in England later that summer. There, his studies focused on British History and Economics. In 1980, Donald was awarded a 3 year fellowship from the National Science Foundation, and in 1982 earned a master's degree in International Development and Public Administration from American University.

Personal
donald with wife Donald was born in Stockton, California in 1957. His family moved to Sacramento in 1962 when his father accepted a position as Deputy Attorney general for the State of California. Growing up, Donald lived, went to school and traveled in Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe due to his father's work in the Peace Corps and U.S. Foreign Service.

Donald is the oldest of three siblings. He has a brother who is a Captain with American Airlines, another brother who is an attorney in Michigan and a sister who is also an attorney in California. Donald's mother is a retired school teacher and lives in Sacramento and his father is retired from the State Department and lives in Rockville, Maryland. Donald lives in Pleasanton, California. with his wife Tanya and their two children Brandon (7) and Shawna (4). His hobbies are playing with his kids, reading and traveling.
