Recycling in Space

John Rau
Jay Garland

Join us to talk about Recycling in space aboard the International Space Station during this month's webcast. NASA Quest Correspondent John Rau will be joined by a NASA scientist from the Advanced Life Support group at the Kennedy Space Center: Jay Garland is the overall manager of this group and he will be talking about how important it is to recycle in space.

The discussion will focus on:

  • Composting in space is converting inedible waste to useable food for plants and humans. Recycling scraps of food and waste is a very efficient process that will some day give our astronauts an indefinite supply of food with out any help from Earth.

  • Gray water is the reclaiming of water from the air, shower water, hand washing water and human urine. It is important to understand that nothing is wasted aboard the International Space Station.
