Challenge: Design a Martian

Mr. Smith's Middle School Class
Rainard School
Design A Martian Group#4
Greebel

Our creature, known simply as Greebel, is a small, microscopic bug that uses its antenna to communicate and swim through the pores in the sand in the ground. It takes iron oxide and expels the oxygen, using chemical energy to break the iron bond releasing the immense energy within and uses part of the energy as body energy, as well as for digging, lighting its glow lamps so it can see, and heating its surroundings so that it is never cold. It has tiny organells which replace human organs such as the heart, the lungs, blood, brain, a full digestive system. The Greebel is an a-sexual creature, and spits up an egg every two months. Life span is one year, and the parent will take care of the children for one month until they are fully grown. Its natural instincts are digging and finding food, but are very social creatures. When one of the species in the group dies, studies show that friends of the creature as well as family feel emotional pain. It breathes carbon dioxide, it doesn't have a water base like humans; it is an advanced creature, stores rust underground for food storage. It does not hibernate, but does sleep. The society is structured and functions like an ant colony. Each creature needs companionship; enemies as well as friends. It uses claws and spade-like feet for burrowing through the sand and never abandons their colony. The Greebel has amazing muscle structure, and can lift 100 times its body weight. The society is built up of underground tunnel networks like we said, it greatly resembles an ant. Families will live in separate quarters, but will go out into the main tunnel structure during the day to help work. It is mandatory that you work starting at the age of 2 months and going till 11 months. Members of the community that live past one year are treated with great respect and regarded as wise beyond their "years".
