Challenge: Design a Martian

Mrs. Wyllie/Mr. Penfield's Science class - North Country Union Junior High School, Derby, Vermont

The Marps
This Martian is a Marp. This particular one is a Marseries which is the name for a male Marp and the female one is called a Marsics. The way to tell them apart is by looking at the tips of their tales and at their faces. A Marseries has a pointed tail which is sometimes used in a fight for a female as a mating ritual and a Marsics has a sphere on the end of its tail. On the face of a Marseries there are gills and on a Marsics there aren't any.

A Marp is born as a silicone bal that rolls and bounces along the surface of Mars until it can get itself to balance on a rock. Once it successfully does this it sucks the Iron and all of the nutrients from the rock and fills itself with the nutrients and when all of the nutrients are gong it starts bouncing until it rests on another rock. It will do this until the silicone is just a protective skin over these nutrients. The silicone when born was stretched in the perfect way to force the animal to take the shape of a full grown Marp.

Once a Marp is full grown it is usually around one foot tall and is a really fast energetic animal. They can run at speeds up to 80mph. A Marp doesn't like to run this fast because they know how much it will hurt to stop. The way that they stop is either to gradually come to a stop or to purposely run into a rock and depend on the silicone to protect them. When a Marp wants to go 80mph it usually will fly because they know how to stop when in the air without getting hurt. A Marp usually waits until it is very old to use flying a lot because as they age their wings get bigger because they are made of Epson salt which they eat on a regular basis. They combine Silicone with the Epson salt to make their wings.

To reproduce two Marps tangle their eye tentacles around each others and the male starts to cry. When it cries it sends out its chemicals and the Marsics catches them in her eyes so their chemicals mix.
