SHARON YAVROM

photo of sharon yavrom I am an Experiment Support Scientist. I integrate science experiments (rodents) onto space shuttle flights to study the effect of zero-gravity as a model of human physiology. There is a lot of interaction between the Primary Scientist, who develops the experiment, the Payload Scientist and other Experiment Support Scientists including plenty of documentation and verification tests in the lab. The most exciting thing about my job is the shuttle launches and landings.

I began working at NASA starting at the bottom as a lab assistant for a space lab mission where I cleaned glassware, labeled vials and made solutions. I soon moved up to lab coordinator and then to Experiment Support Scientist.

I was average in both math and science, but I found both subjects to be interesting. I never felt pressured not to go into a math-and-science based field because it was not "girlish" enough. I didn't know that people would let gender biases affect their lifetime decisions. That is not to say that many men still feel that this is definitely a man's world. Thankfully, there were not many obstacles that I had to overcome to get where I am now. College wasn't easy. Some of the classes were difficult and I had to repeat a few.

When it comes to school and education, never live to regret something. That is, make sure you finish projects or studying to the fullest, so that you never have room to say you could have done better. Life is only as fun as you make it for YOURSELF. Don't ever wait for someone else to make it interesting for you.
