Who I am and What I Do
I have been with NASA since 1982, when I participated in a NASA-sponsored
internship program at Goddard Space Flight Center. Since then, I have
served in different roles at GSFC and NASA Headquarters. My responsibilities
in these roles have included significant involvement in, or management
of, public affairs.
Since March 1999, I have been the education director
at Ames Research Center. As education director, I am responsible for the
center's education programs -- including K-12, college and graduate.
Education
I graduated from the University of Southern California in 1979, with a
B.A. in international relations. I attended a summer session at Cambridge
University, in England, later that summer. There, my studies focused on
British history and economics. In 1980, I was awarded a three-year fellowship
from the National Science Foundation, and in 1982 earned a master's degree
in international development and public administration from American University.
Personal
I
was born in Stockton, California in 1957. My family moved to Sacramento,
in 1962, when my father accepted a position as deputy attorney general
for the state of California. Growing up I lived, went to school and traveled
in Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe due to my father's work in the Peace
Corps and U.S. Foreign Service.
I am the oldest of three siblings. I have a brother
who is a captain with American Airlines, another brother who is an attorney
in Michigan and a sister who is also an attorney in California. My mother
is a retired school teacher and lives in Sacramento and my father is retired
from the State Department and lives in Rockville, Maryland.
My family and I live in Pleasanton, California. My
wife's name is Tanya and we have two children, Brandon (9) and Shawna
(6). My hobbies are playing with my kids, reading and traveling.
