"Today on Mars" program script - part 2 of 2

Live From Mars, program 5, "Today on Mars"
Airs November 13th 1997, on PBS and NASA-TV

10) CAMILLE LEADS TO TES DESCRIPTION: LIVE (00:20) <09:49>
Talks about ROCK STARS, etc.

Seeds FOSSIL action: DISCUSS WITH PAM, DAVID AND PHIL…

Holds up props!!!

CAMILLE:
WE KNOW THAT "THERMAL EMISSION SPECTROMETER" IS QUITE A
MOUTHFUL… SO WE ASKED PHIL CHRISTENSEN AND HIS GRADUATE
STUDENT, CHECK NAME, TO SHOW US HOW IT WORKS…

AND TO BRING THINGS REALLY DOWN TO EARTH, WE THOUGHT WE’D
GIVE THEM ROCKS TO ANALYZE SUBMITTED BY STUDENTS
PARTICIPATING IN Live From Mars!

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED? DO YOU THINK TES WORKED? COULD PHIL
FIGURE OUT WHERE IN THE US THE ROCKS CAME FROM? STAY TUNED!

11) TES IN ACTION: VTR (02:30) <12:19>
PHIL describes how TES works, lots of graphics and MGS animation, and
testing
of the rocks sent in by kids ("Rock Stars")
Pre-taped by KAET crew, edited in Phoenix.
"Mars down to Earth" graphic
transcript to come!!!

12) PHIL Q&A #1 (02:00) <14:19>
SOMEONE, SOMEHOW NEEDS TO PAY OFF THE KID/ROCK QUESTION:
GHS FIGURE OUT AFTER SEEING HOW IT WORKED!!!

13) CAMILLE LEAD TO "MOLA AND MGS", LIVE (00:20) <14:29>
CAMILLE to camera
WE'LL BE BACK WITH PHIL LATER, BUT THERE ARE A NUMBER OF OTHER
INTERESTING INSTRUMENTS ON BOARD MGS, INCLUDING ONE KNOWN
AS "MOLA." YES, THAT'S M-O-L-A, MOLA (CAMILLE AS RAY DAVIES!)

YOU CAN READ ABOUT IT, AND ACTUALLY SIMULATE WHAT IT DOES IN
YOUR CLASSROOM WITH AN ACTIVITY IN THE LFM TEACHER'S GUIDE.
TIM MCCOLLUM AND HIS STUDENTS AT SHOWED US HOW…

14) MOLA AND MGS: VTR (03:00) <17:29>
Pre-taped depiction of MOLA in operation and how Tim's class make their
own

Chapter head:
Live From Mars
SCHOOL REPORT:
CHARLESTON, IL

TIM FULL SOT
“So one of the things that this particular project you’ll be working on
today and
this spacecraft called MGS...all the time it’s orbiting around Mars, it’s
gonna be
shooting beams of light down to surface.”

CAMILLE VO:
ON SEPTEMBER 11, AFTER A TEN MONTH JOURNEY, GLOBAL SURVEYOR
WAS CAPTURED INTO ORBIT AROUND MARS.

ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, DURING ITS THIRD CLOSE APPROACH TO MARS,
GLOBAL SURVEYOR COULD SAFELY POINT ALL ITS SCIENCE
INSTRUMENTS TOWARD THE PLANET FOR THE FIRST TIME.

THE MARS ORBITER LASER ALTIMETER...MOLA WAS TURNED ON FOR A
TEST OF THE SYSTEM BEFORE IT BEGINS ITS SYSTEMATIC MAPPING
MISSION LATER IN 1998.

THIS IS A VISUALIZATION OF DATA COLLECTED BY MOLA.

THE RED LINE SHOWS AN APPROXIMATELY 3000 MILE TRACK OF THE
PLANET’S NORTHERN HEMISPHERE PROBED BY THE LASER ALTIMETER.

THE BULGE IS IN A REGION CALLED THE ELYSIUM RISE, THE SECOND
LARGEST VOLCANIC AREA ON MARS.

THIS TOPOGRAPHIC PROFILE REPRESENTS MOLA DATA COLLECTED
OVER A 20 MINUTE TIME FRAME, THIS BULGE IS AT LEAST 3 MILES HIGH,
BUT THE AREA ALSO HAS DEEP CHASMS... EVIDENCE, PERHAPS, OF
TECTONIC AND VOLCANIC PROCESSES AS WELL AS EROSION...THE
SAME FORCES THAT CARVED THE SURFACE FEATURES OF OUR OWN
PLANET.

Kids demo
TIM FULL SOT:
“To get an idea of what the surface of Mars might look like, we can use
these
pictures

TO UNDERSTAND HOW MOLA WORKS, STUDENTS IN TIM MCCOLLUM’S IN
CHARLESTON, ILLINOIS, CLASS PLANNED A HANDS-ON SIMULATION
BASED ON AN ACTIVITY IN THE Live From Mars TEACHER’S GUIDE.

THEIR TOOLS: CONTOUR MAPS AND PICTURES OF MARS THAT CAN BE
FOUND ON OUR LIVE FROM
MARS WEBSITE OR DIRECTLY FROM NASA.

BUT THEY ALSO USED >LOW-TECH< MATERIALS -- A SHOEBOX,
CARDBOARD, PAPER, ALUMINUM FOIL, ROCKS AND GLUE TO
CONSTRUCT A 3-DIMENSIONAL SEGMENT OF MARS BASED ON THE
CONTOUR MAPS. WHEN TAPED SHUT, THE BOX CONTAINS A "REMOTE"
AND "UNKNOWN" AREA READY TO BE PROBED BY STUDENT
INVESTIGATORS!

AROUND MARS, MOLA USES A LASER THAT FIRES INFRARED PULSES.

IN MR.. MCCOLLUM’S CLASS, THE DEPTH PROFILES WERE OBTAINED
WITH WIRE COAT HANGERS!!!

TIM FULL SOT:
“Each team will have an altimeter rod to use with their boxes....your task
is to
determine the actual shape without looking
being able to look inside."

MOLA’S INFRARED PULSES FIRE TEN TIMES EACH SECOND. HOW LONG
IT TAKES FOR THE LIGHT TO REFLECT OFF THE MARTIAN SURFACE AND
RETURN TO THE ORBITER -- COMBINED WITH CALCULATIONS OF THE
SPACECRAFT'S DISTANCE RELATIVE TO THE CENTER OF THE PLANET --
YIELDS SURFACE ELEVATIONS THAT ARE PRECISE TO WITHIN TENS OF
METERS.

STUDENTS CAREFULLY RECORDED >THEIR< MEASUREMENTS IN
LOGBOOKS. THE NUMBERS WERE THEN TRANSFORMED INTO A SET OF
PHYSICAL PROFILES...RESULTING IN A 3 DIMENSIONAL TOPOGRAPHIC
RELIEF REPRESENTING THE PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN TERRAIN.

WITH THE HANDS-ON PART OF THE SIMULATION COMPLETE, MR.
MCCOLLUM TOOK THE ACTIVITY ONE STEP FURTHER IN THE MIDDLE
SCHOOL COMPUTER LAB.

STUDENTS ENTERED THEIR MEASUREMENTS INTO A SPREAD-SHEET
AND THEN USED AN EASILY ACCESSIBLE SOFTWARE PROGRAM, NIH
IMAGE, TO TRANSFORM THE NUMERICAL DATA INTO VISUAL DISPLAYS.

SO IN THIS ONE ACTIVITY STUDENTS LEARNED ABOUT THE
TOPOGRAPHY OF MARS AND THE INSTRUMENTS ABOARD A NASA
SPACECRAFT… THEY CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION USING
SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES AND COMPUTER SKILLS, AND THEN –
SYMBOLIZING SOME OF THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY LIVE
FROM MARS IN COOPERATION WITH NASA – THEY HAD AN
OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT DIRECTLY WITH GLENN CUNNINGHAM,
PROJECT MANAGER OF MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR MISSION.

BEGIN WITH GLENN SYNC:
AND ONE OF THE VERY IMPORTANT THINGS… speaks about altimeter, and
direct measurement.

Glen and kids interact SOT

15) MGS Q&A LIVE WITH STILL FRAMES (01:00) <18:59>

CAMILLE leads to SUMMIT VTR question for WAYNE:
WELL THOSE STUDENTS INTERACTED BY PLAIN OLD TELEPHONE…
TODAY WE'RE USING TVC AND THE INTERNET… SO…MORE QUESTIONS!

WAYNE, YOU'VE BEEN THE VOICE OF THE NAVIGATION TEAM DURING
OUR PROJECT… SO THIS ONE'S FOR YOU

VTR QUESTION
(Rebecca) I was wondering whether MGS could work on any planet, or whether
it's specific to Mars?

WAYNE answers

Direct to SUMMIT VTR question
Are there North and South magnetic poles on Mars?

GLENN answers ( with still frames)

16) CAMILLE WEB SITE PLUG AND LEAD (00:45) <19:44>
CAMILLE ON CAMERA, with graphic
REMEMBER, YOU CAN FIND OUT HOW TO GET YOUR QUESTIONS
ANSWERED, AND A WHOLE LOT MORE, BY GOING TO THE LIVE FROM
MARS WEB SITE, AT:
http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/mars

THERE'S BACKGROUND ON THE MISSION, BIOGRAPHIES OF MANY OF
NASA'S MARS TEAM, A VIRTUAL TOUR OF PATHFINDER'S LANDING
SITE… AND MUCH MORE.

NOTE: CAMILLE CONTINUES READING…

17) CAMILLE LEADS TO "WEATHER WORLDS" (00:20) <27:04>
CAMILLE: to camera…
ONE OF THE REASONS MARS IS SUCH AN INTERESTING PLACE IS THAT
IN MANY WAYS IT'S LIKE EARTH… IT'S GOT SEASONS, ICE CAPS,
CLOUDS, CANYONS, SAND DUNES… AND WEATHER!

MGS'S INSTRUMENTS SHOULD BE GATHERING WEATHER DATA FOR
MONTHS IF NOT YEARS… AND PATHFINDER RETURNED ALMOST 3
MONTHS OF VERY INTERESTING DATA.

DOWN HERE ON EARTH, Live From Mars HAS BEEN HOSTING AN
ACTIVITY CALLED "WEATHER WORLDS" WHICH INVITES STUDENTS FIRST
TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WEATHER DATA THEY WANT TO COLLECT… AND
THEN TO GO DO IT. YOU'LL SEE STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER AND WHAT
THEY'VE BEEN UP TO…

BUT FIRST, PATHFINDER METEROLOGY TEAM LEADER TIM SCHOLFIELD
TELLS US WHAT PATHFINDER DISCOVERED ABOUT 3 VERY FAMILIAR
SETS OF WEATHER MEASUREMENTS… PRESSURE AND WIND SPEED
AND DIRECTION.

18) "WEATHER WORLDS" VTR (04:00) <31:04>
A) Pathfinder as "weather station" and what it found, includes VTR
sequence
with TIM SCHOFIELD (clouds, wind patterns, dust devil?)

SCHOLFIELD sync

B) VTR from classrooms showing WEATHER WORLDS in action, (includes
DAVID GLASER, GINNY DEXTER, LUCY MARSKE and TBD)
Begin with "MARS DOWN TO EARTH" graphic

DOWN HERE ON EARTH, OUR ONLINE COLLABORATIVE PROJECT,
KNOWN AS "WEATHER WORLDS", ENGAGED STUDENTS ALL ACROSS
THE COUNTRY.

THEY BEGAN BY RESEARCHING WHAT THE >REAL< MARS SCIENTISTS
HAD BEEN DOING… USING THE INTERNET TO LOOK AT SOME OF THE
VERY SAME CHARTS TIM SCHOFIELD REFERRED TO.

THEN IT WAS TIME TO FIND OUT HOW WEATHER DATA IS GATHERED
HERE ON EARTH, AND HOW THEY'D GO ABOUT COLLECTING AND
MEASURING IT FOR THEMSELVES.

THEY HAD TO DECIDE WHICH MEASUREMENTS WERE MOST
IMPORTANT… WHAT INSTRUMENTS WERE REQUIRED… AND HOW TO
MAKE OR ACCESS THEM.

STUDENTS USED WELL THUMBED LIBRARY BOOKS AND NASA'S "MARS
NAVIGATOR" CD-ROM… REFERENCE MATERIALS OLD AND NEW…
THE REAL WORLD CONNECTION GAVE THEM A MOTIVE TO DIG DEEP
AND HARD…

THERE WERE LOTS OF GOOD IDEAS, SO THE NEXT TASK BECAME ONE
OF >DECIDING HOW TO DECIDE<.

TEACHER LUCY MARKSE IN IOWA HAD HER STUDENTS WORK IN TEAMS,
PREPARING FIRST DRAFTS OF THEIR PROPOSALS FOR OTHERS TO
REVIEW AND REFINE.

STUDENTS HERE AND ELSEWHERE TOOK THEIR ROLES VERY
SERIOUSLY.

THEN IT WAS TIME TO POST IDEAS ONLINE… AND TO RESPOND TO
PLANS POSTED BY OTHER CLASSES FROM OTHER REGIONS OF THE
COUNTRY.

TEACHER MARKSE PROVIDED SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO MAKE THE
ONLINE DEBATE PRODUCTIVE…

ONCE AGAIN THE STUDENTS TOOK PAINS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES
CLEARLY, BUT POLITELY.

STUDENTS AT SUNRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PENDLETON, OREGON,
PUT THEIR INSTRUMENTS TO THE TEST… BUT CERTAINLY MADE IT
LOOK LIKE FUN.

THESE BERKELEY YOUNGSTERS CAME UP WITH MANY INGENIOUS
WAYS TO BUILD THEIR INSTRUMENTS, AND TEST THEM TO MAKE SURE
THEY'D WORK JUST RIGHT.

THEY EVEN CAME UP WITH A NOVEL DESIGN TO RECORD
TEMPERATURES
AT NIGHT!

THEN IT WAS TIME TO GATHER DATA, TO SEE HOW WELL THE
INSTRUMENTS WOULD WORK.

IT WAS ONLY JUST ABOVE FREEZING IN IOWA…

AND STILL WARM AND SUNNY IN CALIFORNIA.

FOR THESE CALIFORNIA YOUNGSTERS, JUST AS FOR PATHFINDER, THE
DISAPPOINTMENT WAS TOO LITTLE WIND TO EXERCISE THEIR
SENSORS!

MANY SCHOOLS HAVE JUST BEGUN TO GATHER DATA, AND IT'S REALLY
NEVER TOO LATE TO JOIN IN…

BUT "WEATHER WORLDS" WAS NEVER JUST ABOUT WEATHER..

STUDENTS LEARNED SOME PRACTICAL TECHNOLOGY… HOW TO MAKE
BAROMETERS, AND USE WET AND DRY BULB THERMOMETERS… BUT
THEY ALSO MASTERED MANY BASIC SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS -- WHAT
CONSTITUTES "ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE" AND "HUMIDITY", AND
DETAILS OF THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CLOUDS.

BUT MORE… THEY HAD A CHANCE TO PRACTISE LOOKING FOR
INFORMATION… DECIDING WHAT WAS MOST IMPORTANT, AND HOW TO
EXPRESS OPINIONS TO OTHERS…

… ALLOWING KIDS WITH SPECIAL SKILLS IN MAKING INSTRUMENTS TO
FEEL PRIDE IN WHAT THEY'D DONE…

THEY KNEW THE ANXIETY OF SHARING PLANS WITH CLASSMATES AND
PEERS -- VIA THE INTERNET. AND THEY KNEW THE RESPONSIBILITY OF
REVIEWING OTHERS WORK.

FOR ALL THESE STUDENTS, PARTICIPATING IN WEATHER WORLDS
CERTAINLY BROUGHT PATHFINDER'S MARTIAN DATA DOWN TO EARTH…

BUT IT ALSO MADE THEM MISSION DESIGNERS, WRITERS, EDITORS,
REVIEWERS, ENGINEERS, RESEARCHERS, COMMUNICATORS… ALL OF
THEM "JUNIOR CO-INVESTIGATORS" BOTH OF WEATHER AND THE
SCIENTIFIC PROCESS.

19) CAMILLE ON WEATHER WORLDS PARTICIPATION AND WEB SITE
(01:00) <32:04>

CAMILLE:
REMEMBER, YOU CAN FIND OUT HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DATA
GATHERING PHASES OF WEATHER WORLDS BY GOING ONLINE, TODAY,
AT OUR Live From Mars SITE… DON'T DELAY!

BUT ALONG WITH DATA, THESE MARS MISSIONS HAVE ALSO RETURNED
A TREASURE TROVE OFIMAGES. HERE'S MORE ON WHAT WE CAN
EXPECT FROM MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR!

20) MGS IMAGING: VTR (03:00) <35:04>
Pre-taped sequence showing MGS's camera, CJ's kids in Pittsburgh

OVER THE LIFE OF THE MISSION, IF ALL GOES WELL, MGS SHOULD STILL
MAP MOST OF THE PLANET. ITS SOPHISTICATED CAMERA CAN RECORD
IMAGES THAT ARE BOTH WIDER ANGLE >AND< CLOSER UP THAN THE
VIKING ORBITERS COULD.

WE'VE ALREADY SEEN THE NEWEST PICTURES OF ROCK STRATA AND
POSSIBLE DRY LAKE BEDS…

BUT MIKE MALIN, THE CAMERA'S DESIGNER…

…ALSO RELEASED AN AMAZINGLY DETAILED "FLY-OVER"…

…A CLIFF AND SLOPING AREA AT THE WESTERN END OF THE "GANGES
CHASMA."

WHAT GLOBAL SURVEYOR IS SHOWING US IS A LANDSLIDE, AND
LAYERS OF DEFORMED SURFACE…

…FARTHER ON OUR FLIGHT ACROSS MARS THE BEDROCK IS COVERED
BY SAND, EXCEPT WHERE A FEW BOULDERS, SOME THE SIZE OF
AUTMOBILES, LIE STREWN ON THE SURFACE…

THESE ARE THE VERY LATEST IMAGES FROM MARS… BUT SCHOOLS
EVERYWHERE HAVE A CHANCE TO BRING THE STUDY OF MARS DOWN
TO EARTH VIA THE INTERNET.

HERE IN PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, TEACHER C.J. RODKEY INVITES
STUDENTS TO PUT THEMSELVES IN THE PLACE OF NASA SCIENTISTS,
SELECTING A LANDING SITE FOR FUTURE MARS MISSIONS.

CJ sync:
"What kind of things… a good thing."

CJ'S STUDENTS USE A SIMULATION DEVELOPED BY NASA'S CLASSROOM
OF THE FUTURE AND, LIKE OUR MOLA CLASS, NIH IMAGE SOFTWARE,

THESE STUDENTS WORK WITH REAL MARTIAN IMAGES… AND LEARN TO
INTERPRET WHAT THEY'RE SEEING.

AFTER THE IMAGE PROCESSING SESSION, THIS CLASS GOT TO SPEAK
DIRECTLY WITH MIKE MALIN… AND YOU'LL SOON FIND A RECORD OF
THEIR INTERACTION ONLINE.

BACK TO CAMILLE!!! FOR LEAD:
BUT RIGHT NOW, LIVE AND DIRECT FROM ARIZONA STATE, STUDENTS
HAVE A CHANCE TO ASK ONE OF THE OTHER MARS SCIENTISTS ALL
ABOUT >HIS< LATEST RESULTS… OVER TO YOU, DAVID SEIDEL…

CAMILLE:
WELL JUST BECAUSE PATHFINDER'S MISSION IS OVER, AND THIS IS THE
LAST PROGRAM IN OUR "Live From Mars" SERIES, DOES >NOT< BY
ANY MEANS INDICATE THE PACE OF EXPLORATION IS SLOWING… FIRST
THERE'S "MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR"… BUT THEN THERE'S THE WHOLE
"MARS SURVEYOR" PROGRAM, FOLLOWING IN THE ROCKET-STREAM OF
PATHFINDER AND MGS…

See NORM in the sandbox!!!

WITH US TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT FUTURE IS JPL'S
NORM HAYNES…

CAMILLE:
HERE'S WHAT'S PLANNED FOR "MARS AHEAD"

24) "MARS AHEAD": VTR (04:00) <50:56>
CAMILLE VO
Still frame: MARS AHEAD

THE NEXT MISSION TO VISIT THE RED PLANET WILL BE "MARS
SURVEYOR 98" – ONE NAME, BUT >TWO< SPACECRAFT…

…ONE AN ORBITER DESIGNED TO SURVEY THE GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION
OF WATER VAPOR, DUST, TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE…

THE OTHER, A LANDER DESIGNED TO DIG DOWN IN SOME OF MARS'
MOST INTERESTING TERRAIN.

LAUNCH FOR THE ORBITER COMES IN DECEMBER 1998… HIGH ABOVE
EARTH, EACH ROCKET STAGE FALLS AWAY, AND THE SPACECRAFT IS
SPUN UP TO ACHIEVE STABILITY ON ITS JOURNEY TO MARS.

ON BOARD IS AN INSTRUMENT TO HUNT FOR WATER AND SURVEY
MARS' ATMOSPHERE…

AND THE MARS COLOR IMAGER, KNOWN AS "MARCI" (pron. MARSEY)

ONE MONTH LATER, THE LANDER DEPARTS, FOLLOWING ALONG TO
MARS…

IN SEPTEMBER 1999, THE ORBITER ARRIVES, AND – LIKE MARS GLOBAL
SURVEYOR – AEROBRAKES, TO SLOW DOWN AND LOWER ITSELF INTO A
MAPPING ORBIT.

THEN THE CAMERA COMES INTO ITS OWN… USING ITS WIDE ANGLE TO
IMAGE SURFACE FEATURES… AND ITS NARROW ANGLE TO MEASURE
OZONE AND ASSAY MARTIAN MINERALS.

THEN THE LANDER ARRIVES…

JUST AFTER JETTISONING ITS CRUISE STAGE, TWO MICROPROBES ARE
RELEASED. ONLY 4 POUNDS EACH, BUT PACKED WITH SOPHISTICATED
MINIATURE INSTRUMENTS, THEIR SHELL PROTECTS THEM FROM THE
HEAT, AND ORIENTS THEM AS THEY PLUNGE DOWNWARDS.

THEY IMPACT THE SURFACE AT 400 MILES PER HOUR, AND – IF ALL
GOES WELL – THEIR FRONT PART BURIES ITSELF BENEATH THE SOIL TO
SEARCH FOR SUBSURFACE WATER ICE… COMMUNICATING BACK TO
THE ORBITER VIA INSTRUMENTS SAFELY ENCASED IN THE AFTERBODY

THE LANDER ARRIVES MUCH MORE SEDATELY!

PROTECTED IN THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE BY ITS HEAT RESISTANT
BACKSHELL, A PARACHUTE SLOWS IT STILL MORE, BEFORE ROCKET
ENGINES CARRY IT THROUGH THE FINAL STAGES OF A POWERED
DESCENT.

IN AN EXCITING FIRST, A DESCENT IMAGING CAMERA CHARACTERIZES
THE SURFACE WHERE IT LANDS.

TOUCHDOWN SHOULD BE ABOUT 500 MILES FROM MARS' SOUTH POLE,
THE HIGHEST LATITUDE LANDING YET ON THE PLANET.

THE SURVEYOR LANDER HAS A ROBOTIC ARM, DESIGNED TO DIG DOWN
INTO WHAT'S CALLED "LAYERED TERRAIN"… AN AREA WHICH
SCIENTISTS THINK HAS BEEN CREATED BY SUCCESSIVE MELTING AND
FREEZING OF THE MARTIAN POLAR CAP… TRAPPING GENERATIONS OF
DUST WHICH MIGHT CONTAIN CLUES TO MARS' CLIMATE HISTORY.

THE SOIL GETS ANALYZED BY AN ONBOARD LABORATORY…

JUST AS ON PATHFINDER, THERE'S A CAMERA SYSTEM TO IMAGE THE
LANDING SITE, WITH FILTERS TO REVEAL THE PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT
KINDS OF ROCKS…

IF THE CAMERA LOOKS RATHER LIKE PATHFINDER'S "IMP" – THERE'S A
VERY GOOD REASON.

JUST LIKE THE IMP, THE CAMERA WAS BUILT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
ARIZONA, TUCSON.

"Live From Mars" VISITED A BASEMENT CLEAN ROOM, WHERE A TEAM
WORKING WITH PETE SMITH WAS PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON
THE CAMERA…

ACROSS THE ROOM, OTHER RESEARCHERS WERE WORKING ON THE
SPECIAL "WRIST" CAMERA WHICH WILL BE ATTACHED TO SURVEYOR'S
ROBOT ARM, ALLOWING SCIENTISTS TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT'S SHE'S
GATHERING, FROM WHERE…

IF ALL GOES WELL, THE SURVEYOR 98 LANDER AND ORBITER WILL
SURVIVE TO RETURN YEAR'S OF DATA… LEADING ON TO THE SAMPLE
RETURN MISSIONS IN THE FIRST DECADE OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

THESE WILL LIKELY USE LONG-RANGE ROVERS WHICH WILL ROAM
MILES FROM THE LANDERS, COLLECTING ROCKS AND RETURNING
THEM TO BASE… WAITING FOR THE FIRST TICKET HOME TO EARTH.

ALREADY TESTS OF THIS ROVER, KNOWN AS "NOMAD", HAVE LOGGED
MORE THAN 133 MILES ACROSS CHILE'S RUGGED ATACAMA DESERT…

BUT IN THE SECOND DECADE OF THE NEW MILLENIUM, THE HOPE IS TO
LAUNCH THE FIRST >HUMAN< MISSIONS TO MARS…

AND IF HUMANS GO, WE'LL NEED NEW KINDS OF SPACESUITS TO
PROTECT THEM ON THE ROCKY MARTIAN SURFACE, AND ALLOW THEM
TO DO WHAT GEOLOGISTS LOVE TO DO… REACH DOWN AND GATHER
ROCKS.

ALREADY RESEARCHERS AT NASA'S JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, HOME
OF THE SHUTTLE ASTRONAUTS, ARE DEVELOPING SUITS TO MEET
THOSE CHALLENGES.

BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO TEST THE SUITS ON THE GROUND… IN
NORMAL EARTH GRAVITY.

WILL THEY WORK ON MARS, WITH ITS MUCH WEAKER GRAVITY?

HERE JSC'S PHIL WEST – HIS DAY JOB IS SUPPORTING EVA'S, OR SPACE
WALKS – SHOWS US WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE KC-135 JET – A.K.A THE
"VOMIT COMET" – GOES INTO ONE OF ITS LONG, LOOPING PARABOLAS…

FOR MINUTES AT A TIME, EARTH'S GRAVITY LESSENS… SEE HOW MUCH
MORE SLOWLY THAT MARS BALL IS FALLING BACK INTO PHIL'S HAND?

THEN IT'S TIME TO TEST THE MARS THE "ADVANCED SPACESUIT
TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRTOR."

UP AND DOWN THE KC-135, THERE'S A LITTLE STRIP OF MARS… RUST-
RED ROCKS, WITH A RUGGED SURFACE DESIGNED TO TEST BOOTS AND
SUIT.

UP AND DOWN THEY GO… SOMETIMES LOSING BALANCE…
PROTOTYPING NOW IN WHAT THEY CALL "SPACESUIT DYNAMICS TESTS"
THE FASHIONS THAT MAY THE RAGE ON MARS IN THE YEAR 2018…
