TOUCHDOWN + 6! program script - part 2 of 2

33. MARVELOUS MARS #2 / VTR (00:30) ET 00:32
Earth and Mars, same and different.

34. CAMILLE WELCOME BACK / LIVE (00:30) ET 01:02
We've got sites all across the US and as you'll soon see, around the
world, "watching" via the Internet, but it's all happening out at JPL and
-- via JPL -- on Mars! So, off to the source! David?

***ALLCON: THIS WAS WRITTEN BEFORE THEY MOVED THE PRESS CON.
TIME. SO THIS WILL BE REVISED. STILL THERE WILL BE A JPL RE-INTRO
HERE***

35. PRESS CONFERENCE / LIVE (01:00) ET 02:32
Seidel back of room, whispers, latest release (MUST HAVE PIX!), move off
to see speakers -- notes who was on show 3A, who is to come on LFM 3B if
all goes well.

SEIDEL:
DAVID SEIDEL HERE, IN THE VON KARMAN AUDITORIUM AT NASA'S JPL!
I'M WHISPERING SINCE I'M AT THE BACK OF TODAY'S PRESS
CONFERENCE. IT'S BEEN GOING STRONG FOR ABOUT (CHECK)
MINUTES. IT'S FEATURING IMAGES OF (CHECK) AND (CHECK).
SCIENTISTS (CHECK) AND (CHECK) HAVE JUST BEEN SAYING (CHECK,
CHECK, CHECK.)

WE HOPE TO BRING YOU MORE OF THESE AMAZING IMAGES! BUT
THERE'S A VERY INTERESTING ISSUE CONCERNING TIME ON EARTH
AND MARS! CAMILLE AND NEIL, CAN YOU PLEASE STRAIGHTEN IT OUT
FOR US.

36. "LIVE" / TIME, ETC. / LIVE (01:00) ET 03:32

CAMILLE:

STICK WITH US, AND ALL WILL BE CLEAR

Graphic read-on: AMNH image?
IT'S NOW THREE O'CLOCK IN NEW YORK, AND -- OF COURSE -- IN
WHEELING AND BALTIMORE, EASTERN TIME.

New frame: HMNS
IN HOUSTON, TEXAS, IT'S 2:00 PM CENTRAL TIME.

New frame: the Mall at JPL, or press room
IN >MOST< PARTS OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA, IT'S 12:00 NOON, PACIFIC
TIME.

New frame: MPF mission control (with super?)
BUT IN CERTAIN PARTS OF JPL, THOUGH PHYSICALLY SITUATED IN
PASADENA, IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT >MARS TIME< THAT IS.

Live shot: almost empty
YOU SEE THE MEN AND WOMEN OF PATHFINDER ARE OPERATING
ALMOST AS IF ON MARS.

WHEN IT'S NOON IN PASADENA, IT'S 2:00 A.M. AT SAGAN MEMORIAL
STATION, THE PATHFINDER LANDER SITE ON MARS. IT'S NIGHT, IT'S
DARK, AND THERE'S NO SOLAR ENERGY TO POWER SOJOURNER OR
THE LANDER.

THAT'S WHY PATHFINDER MISSION CONTROL IS ALMOST EMPTY. THE
HUMAN "MARS TEAM" IS ASLEEP OR JUST COMING ON DUTY, JUST LIKE
ITS ROBOT COUNTERPARTS ON MARS.

MPS science area, bustling and hustling
BUT THIS IS HOW IT LOOKED HALF A DAY EARLIER WHEN THE REST OF
THE COUNTRY WAS ASLEEP.

Cut to Neil

NEIL:
THE TIME DIFFERENCE NOT ONLY AFFECTS THE MISSION BUT ALSO THE
WAY YOU GET TO SEE PICTURES ONLINE AND DURING OUR LIVE TV
PROGRAMS. LIKE THE MISSION TEAM, AT THIS MOMENT, SOJOURNER
AND THE LANDER ARE ALSO SLEEPING. THIS MEANS NO LIVE PICTURES
ARE BEING RECEIVED AT THIS VERY MOMENT. IN FACT NORTH AMERICA
IS BELOW MARS HORIZON, AS SEEN FROM SAGAN STATION.

BUT DOWN HERE ON EARTH AND 'ROUND THE CLOCK, THE IMAGE
PROCESSING LAB IS WORKING. EACH MORNING, CALIFORNIA TIME, NEW
PICTURES ARE RELEASED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON >THIS< PLANET.
THAT'S WHY WE THINK IT'S STILL OK TO CALL OUR PROGRAM "LIVE
FROM MARS" BECAUSE YOU AND WE ARE AMONG THE VERY FIRST TO
SEE THE LATEST IMAGES.

37. SOJOURNER'S TRAVELS / VTR (01:00) ET 04:32
Camille VO animation: brief summary of what was supposed to happen the
first rover on another planet

CHAPTER HEAD: ROAMING ROUND MARS: THE PLAN
WELL WHEN SOJOURNER'S NOT SLEEPING, THIS IS WHAT WAS
SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN.

THE ROVER WOULD ROLL DOWN ITS RAMP, ROLL AT (CHECK)
CENTIMETERS PER SECOND OVER TO A NEARBY ROCK, AND BEGIN TO
SNIFF IT, OFTEN OVERNIGHT, FOR 10 HOURS AT A TIME.

THAT'S WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN AND, EVERYONE IS
PLEASED TO SAY, IT PRETTY MUCH WENT EXACTLY AS PLANNED.

38. SOJOURNER'S FIRST DAYS / VTR & LIVE (04:00) ET 08:32

CHAPTER HEAD: ROAMING ROUND MARS: FOR REAL
SEIDEL and DONNA narrate scenes from Sojourner's time on the surface.
Video, stills, animation, etc. inc. APXS, including preliminary science
results. Just as in the previous sequences, we use the very best images
from the actual rover travels round Mars.

THE BUSIEST PEOPLE AT JPL THESE PAST FEW DAYS HAS BEEN THE
PRIMARY ROVER DRIVER, BRIAN COOPER HIS SHIFT NOW RUNS FROM
10 PM TO 6:00 AM PACIFIC TIME SO WE HOPE HE'S RESTING UP FOR
THE RIST-RED ROAD JUST NOW.

BUT HE'S CERTAINLY ONE OF THE "PATHFINDER PEOPLE" WE WANTED

IT TAKES MORE THAN ROBOTS TO MAKE A MISSION FLY AND THE
MEMBERS OF THE HUMAN TEAM SPEND SO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY
ON A PROJECT LIKE THIS THAT THEY BECOME A KIND OF FAMILY.

AND PATHFINDER'S NEIGHBORS AND COLLEAGUES AT JPL THE
PEOPLE WORKING ON MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR, DUE TO ARRIVE AT
MARS IN SEPTEMBER, SHARE HOPES, HARD WORK, AND THE HIGHS OF
ACHIEVING WHAT PRESIDENT KENNEDY CALLED THINGS WORTH DOING,
NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE EASY, BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE HARD.

***AS SUGGESTED BY CAROLYN, TWO SEQUENCES ARE SMOOSHED
TOGETHER: themes are analyzing rocks, and looking for signs of life:
NOTE -- 2 SEQUENCES, BUT NO MORE TIME!!!***
51. HMNS MISSION #3 / LIVE & VTR (02:30) ET 41:47
as before, we join the Mars mission in progress

location: Glovebox lab :

Janel introduces kids handling (weighing, measuring) meteorites, rocks and
minerals. Tom holds rocks and minerals that could be found on Mars

close-ups of rocks and minerals -- Tom is a geologist. He explains
the kinds of rocks we expect on Mars and explains how exciting it is to
touch another world. Tom also explains the advantages of having humans in
the loop when you're looking for interesting rocks.

TESTING FOR LIFE
Janel explains that astronauts at this station continually monitor the
life support functions of the spaceship -- checking air, water, and power
supplies. And in this mission they are also equipped to test soils for
signs of life.

Tom explains that adding moisture can trigger a reaction that might
indicate the presence of microbes in the soil. Kids add water to three
clear glasses with soil in them: one does nothing, one bubbles and then
stops, one continues to bubble and get milky. Tom explains that the effect
which stops is probably a chemical change, but the effect that continues
could indicate the presence of life in the soil. Tom says that the crew
will make many tests like this with real soil before they land on Mars.

52. NEIL & CAMILLE LEAD TO COTF / LIVE (00:30) ET 41:47

NEIL:
THANKS, ANTARES TOM'S BASE ON EARTH IS THE JOHNSON SPACE
CENTER AND ONE SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT THIS YEAR IS THE
FIRST-EVER AGREEMENT FOR THE HUMAN EXPLORERS IN HOUSTON
AND THE ROBOT EMISSARIES FROM JPL TO WORK TOGETHER TO
PREPARE FOR HUMAN MISSIONS TO MARS

CAMILLE:
GETTING THERE WILL REQUIRE SKILLS IN SPACE CONSTRUCTION -- AND
THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW KINDS OF TEAMWORK. CLASSROOM OF
THE FUTURE -- AS YOU'D EXPECT -- IS ONE PLACE WHERE SUCH
FUTURE SKILLS ARE BEING GROWN IN SOME MOST UNUSUAL WAYS!

location: Mission Commander console with crews all at stations. Janel
shows that all the crew equipment is stowed and everyone is ready for
landing. Tom indicates that are about to land on the oldest region of Mars
-- an ancient water carved feature called Dao Vallis, where they might
find signs of life. Tom says that as a scientist, he is now turning the
mission over to a test pilot, the mission commander, Gene Cernan, who will
control the landing on Mars.
