Actually NASA developed the wind models usd by Mars Pathfinder and the Mar
Polar Lander now approaching Mars. These models are continually being
updated based our improved understanding of the global circulation of the
atmosphere of Mars. Recently the topographic data received from the MOLA
instrument on the orbiting MGS spacecraft have contributed information so
that the global circulation models and estimate high altitude winds. Once
the Mars Climate Orbiter (also presently enroute) arrives it will use its
PIMRR instrument to probe the atmosphere of Mars and again improve our
models.
