February 5th 1999
Well, today is the big day. My first live event is today. I am somewhat nervous and
am not sure if everything will work right. I have never done a live event interview
before and I hope that I don't studder or do or say something stupid. I got up earlier
today. I tested everything an hour and a half before the event and everything was
working as planned. Hans was very supportive and was actually eager to participate
in the event. He talks very well and knows a lot about a variety of topics. We had a successful event. The only thing that happened was that when the students at the
schools tried to run the video and audio and the chat window at the same time they
could only get one or the other. That is very unfortunate. Hopefully we won't have that problem next week when we have our second event. I think that is also good for the
moral of the people here. It seems that they need a break sometimes from the everyday
things that they do and this was sort of a fun event that they could do to relax for a half
an hour.
The weather here looks a little bit gloomy now. It has been overcast all day
but I think that it could start raining at any moment now. I am sitting here typing in
my car and waiting for the others to come back. They went to go get some food.
When they come back I am going to go back to motel and send out some mail and get
something to eat as well. I haven't eaten all day. As for the Marsokhod they are always working on it. Today they have been working on one of the cameras. They had to call the maker of the camera to see how to adjust the shutter speed. They took it all apart and
have to adjust screws to set the right adjustments. Another scientist came today,
actually last night, to work with the Spectrometer readings. He will be here until the 19th of February or so.
Today was another late day of working. The team seemed to be out there forever.
Fixing this and fixing that. There isn't much else to say about today. I will be signing
off now.
