February 4th 1999

So far today has been a pretty smooth day. I came to the site and got Alan Federman on the line and he talked with Hans. Together they managed to fix the routing problem. Also a big thanks to Castandi is in order. He has helped us on the Ames side of this project very much with networking issues. I have the Encoder going now. It is encoding video of the robot. It is not doing much at the moment but it is still being broadca st live over the internet.

I took some more pictures too. Cesar, Linda, Edmond and Sergey were out working on the dirt road that leads to the landing site of the rover. I took some pictures of them out there. They were being called the chain gang. Right now they went to go get lunch. This morning I came out to my car and my front tire was a little flat. I filled it up at the gas station and now it seems to be doing fine but I hope it lasts until I get back into town. I might end up changing it some time down the line. The rocks around here are pretty sharp and there are some mean looking bushes too. Right now the rover is about to bash into the side of my car. I usually sit in my car and type this stuff and convert my photos. It works out well because I hook up a car battery to an ac power converter and plug my laptop into it. It relieves the congestion of traffic in the RV and it is warm in here too. Later on we might hook up a wireless video link, so I can go around and film things that are farther away from the RV and also it can be hooked into the Rover, so you can see what the rover sees. There wouldn't be any Audio unless I hooked the audio into the walkie-talkies. That could be a plan. We will see what we can do. That is all for right now. I will write more tonight when I have more to report on.

I am back. Well I went into town and got my tires fixed on my Blazer. I guess I should take it easy on the trails from now on. It has been raining for quite a while now. I came back to my motel, but I got bored so I went back out to the site to wait for the rest of the team to finish working so that we could all go get some dinner. They worked longer than I expected. I ended up not getting back to my room till 10:30. I was very tired. That is all I have to report on today.

I will be encoding a live event tomorrow so I should get some good sleep. Bye for now.

B
