February 27th, 1999

Well today was an early riser type of day. We met up with the team at six in the morning in the lobby. we then proceeded to the school in which this particular event would be taking place. We arrived and began unpacking everything from our vehicles. We agreed to come to the city of Barstow to show the equipment and talk with students about the testing that went on in their own community. It was somewhat of a deal with the Bureau of Land Management in order to use the land. We were most enthusiastic about doing this event. It was a way for us to know that what we were doing was also benefiting the community as well as the science community. My plan was to have a table set up where I could talk about the web site that I had worked on this month. I set up a monitor and my laptop computer. I needed a phone line to get Internet access though.

The closest one was about a hundred feet away from the area where people would be walking around in. I had to go down to Walmart to get the supplies needed to make this all happen. I returned and got things up and running before the people started coming through. Through out the day we did a total of about six shows. The on lookers would sit in the bleachers and Hans and the Ames team would operate the Rover while the JSC team talked about the suit. After about a half hour of that the people would be directed to the gymnasium where the data and other exhibits were. That was where I was most of the time. I brought up the astronaut and rover clip up off the Internet to show everyone that walked by. Some though it was interesting while others were more interested in how big the monitor was and what kind of equipment I was using. I tried to answer as many questions as I could and then pass them on to John Shriener who would talk about the Panoramic picture of Silver Lake on the wall. Overall I think it was a very good day. Many people were interested in what we were doing and they enjoyed the time. I know that a lot of people took the little piece of paper that said what the web sites were that had information regarding the test.

I hope many of them will like the pictures I will be putting up of the event today. I took a lot of pictures and video today. I hope to get them up on the web soon. After all of that we went to a dinner hosted by the city of Barstow. I must say that the food was quite good. The people were friendly and the music was good too. My favorite part about it was that they had some telescopes out in front of the building and we could look through them. I saw Saturn in one of them and it looked really cool. You could see the rings and everything. The moon also looked good tonight. Well I am sitting here in my room and I am getting ready to get to bed. I am planning on leaving early in the morning, for I am anxious to get home. I guess this concludes the many journals that I have written. I could write one for tomorrow but I doubt you would want to hear about the ride home. It will probably be a normal trip. But if any of you out there really want to know what happens in the life of Seth Carter for tomorrow you can E-mail me off of this web-site at the E-mail link on the home page. Or email me at sjcarter@mail.arc.nasa.gov. It has been a pleasure reporting on this months activities. If you have any questions or comments don't hesitate to forward them to me. For the last and final time this is Seth Carter, signing off.

Good-Bye!
