Mars Exploration Education

  • During the first 40 to 50 minutes Don Scott, a NASA Education Specialist demonstrated some of his favorite Mars Exploration education activites.

    During the entire presentation participants submitted questions to a chat room. After the audio/video presentation, a Q & A session continued in the chat room.

    Activity One: "How many Moon Units to Mars?"

  • Items to Have
    • Basketball
    • Tennis Ball
    • Several yards of string or yarn
  • Items to Research
    • The average distance of the Earth to the Moon
    • The circumference of the Earth

    Activity Two: "Minus 6 to Mars"

  • Items to Have
    • Measuring tool
    • Large table
    • Blocks (to rest one end of the table on - suggested: 6" square)
  • Items to Research
    • What are most important concerns about human physiology on a 6-month mission to Mars?

    Activity Three: "It's Alive!"

  • Items to Have
    • 3 small cups
    • Sand
    • Alka seltzer
    • Yeast
    • Water
  • Items to Research
    • What simple test could be applied to martian soil to look for evidence of life?
    • What is life?
    • What does life need to exist?

    Activity Four: "Reading Rocks"

  • Items to Have
    • Collection of rocks (some smooth, some rough, varied colors, any other variation you can find)
    • Writing pad and pencil (Chat room!)
