Learning Technologies Channel presents...

Stanford SOLAR Center
"All About the Sun"

Welcome! Each month, our Solar Savvy Solar Scientist Paul Mortfield from Stanfords' SOLAR Center will take you on a journey, in and around the science of the Sun. Please join us for the second in what is already a dynamic and educational monthly series.

You will be able to study and interact with experts in Solar Science and experience the effects of solar energy and radiation on our lives here on earth. Paul is uniquely talented in his approach to learning and teaching science and will apply logic and sense to your students understanding of our solar system and the surrounding universe.

Schedule

DATE EVENT TIME DESCRIPTION
April 27 "All About the Sun" Part 2 Archive 10:00 am - 11:00 am PST (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST) How does energy travel from the Sun's core to Earth? We'll talk with Dr. John Beck of Stanford University who studies the convection zone of the sun, where bubbles of hot gas the size of Texas rise to the solar surface and magnetic fields are twisted like rubber bands.
March 23 "All About the Sun" Archive 10:00 am - 11:00 am PST (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST) Our guest will be Dr. Todd Hoeksema of Stanford University, Center for Space Science and Astrophysics. We'll talk about the Solar Cycle, solar flares, coronal mass ejections and what it's like inside the sun. Discussion will center around results obtained from the SOHO spacecraft which is parked 1 million miles away from Earth, studying the sun 24 hours a day.

Toward the end of this Webcast, Paul (our Host) will recap what we learned today about the Sun. A Solar scavenger hunt will reward the first 25 students online who correctly complete the scavenger hunt, with a SOLAR poster. Future Webcasts will link the topics to a web activity, that students and educators can make use of at the classroom level. Learn more about the Stanford SOLAR Center
