[ DaveUrbanMiddleSchool - 25 - 10:14:44 ] It is almost
impossible to hear the person from the
submarine
[ Tibor/Hungary - 26 - 10:17:37 ] Dan: Do you see the view
through the submarine camera?
[ DaveUrbanMiddleSchool - 27 - 10:18:58 ] NO-on the
internet we are not hearing you at all. Sounds
like she is talking in a
bubble-very hard to understand.
~~~Culture Kids
[ David/huenemehighschool - 29 - 10:20:53 ] why did you
choose channel islands??
[ DaveUrbanMiddleSchool - 30 - 10:21:37 ] How deep is
the submarine right now.
[ DanRichards - 31 - 10:22:25 ] The submarine has small
port holes for the observer and the sub driver to look through, the
video records the dive for us to review after the dive.
[ CaddyCalifornia - 33 - 10:23:14 ] I can hear all of the
sound great! This is fun.
[ Dean/Hueneme - 34 - 10:23:51 ] How are you getting
your breathing air right now?
[ CaddyCalifornia - 35 - 10:24:37 ] You talked about this
dive maybe contributing to the
white abolone being classified in
such a way so that it
is more protected. Can you share some details
about what
is involved in getting a sea creature protected?
[ David/huenemehighschool - 36 - 10:24:39 ] what is the
purpose of this dive?
[ Brian/homeschool - 37 - 10:26:59 ] Are you deep enough
to see glow in the dark creatures?
[ Colleen - 38 - 10:27:06 ] Laura, if you saw any squid,
how big are they??
[ CaddyCalifornia - 39 - 10:27:40 ] How much does a
submarine like you are in cost?
If I were rich, could I buy one
myself? Do regular
folks ever buy them?
[ Jonathan/HuenemeHigh - 40 - 10:28:04 ] How deep is the
Sub right now??
[ Louise/Canada - 41 - 10:28:07 ] What kind of air
pressure do you keep in the submarine and do you need to go through
decompression stages when coming back to the surface?
[ Colleen - 42 - 10:28:24 ] Laura, Have you seen any
pinnipeds?
[ David/huenemehighschool - 43 - 10:29:15 ] what kind of
submarine is used for this type of dive?
[ Dean/hueneme - 44 - 10:30:11 ] what is powering your
sub rigth now?
[ Andrea/Ames - 45 - 10:30:11
] Hi all we will try and send some of your questions to the
submarine -- We also have a few scientists from the Channel Islands
National Park in the chat room - and may have an answer to your
questions.
[ Julie/homeschool - 46 - 10:30:53 ] Will you, or have you
taken any ocean water samples from this canyon, and is there any
difference from shallow waters?
[ Justin - 47 - 10:31:57 ] Steve Gittings, Sanctuary
Manager for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary,
asks if this an area frequented by whales who may be feeding?
[ CaddyCalifornia - 48 - 10:31:57 ] What is the weather
like at the Channel Islands now?
How do people get there? Is there a
ferry from LA? How
much does it cost?
[ Justin - 50 - 10:34:42 ] how much light is there at 550
feet?
[ DanaAsheCountyCareerCenter - 51 - 10:35:03 ] I am a
foreign exchange student in the US, and I would like to know more
about the purpose/importance of finding abalone in the Channel.
[ Dean/hueneme - 52 - 10:35:45 ] that answered my
question good
[ Robert/KSC - 54 - 10:37:56 ] Gregg and I are connected
here in Florida and everything sounds great over here. Glad to see
that so many are connected.
[ Andrea/Ames - 55 - 10:38:14
] RE: [Sandy/Questteam]
andrea: I'm
getting email from teachers. They all say Laura is impossible to
understand and asked that if Tom could repeat his questions and
what she says, it would be a lot better for them. Sandy --
I will ask Tom that - The text transcription is proving to be a great
record of what is being said. It is a link from
quest.arc.nasa.gov/ltc/nps
[ Dean/hueneme - 56 - 10:40:54 ] Is there a rescue team
if any incident should ocurr and the sub goes?
[ David/huenemehighschool - 57 - 10:41:34 ] how many
people are on the sub?
[ Dean/hueneme - 58 - 10:43:06 ] On my last question I
meant" goes down?"
[ Andrea/Ames - 60 - 10:43:26
] RE: [David/huenemehighschool] how
many people are on the sub? It is a two-person sub.
[ David/huenemehighschool - 61 - 10:44:20 ] thanks
[ Julie/homeschool - 62 - 10:44:57 ] What kind of current
can be seen, if any?
[ CrystalMiddleSchool/California - 63 - 10:45:37 ] Laura:
Are you scared at all? What
dangers are there.
P.S. My students are
here now!
[ Andrea/Ames - 64 - 10:46:12
] For all of you that are not getting your questions answered we
will ask Tom to visit the chat room when he returns from the ship
and answer your great questions.
So if your question is not answered
today - please check back in a few days.
[ Andrea/Ames - 65 - 10:48:44
] Welcome - Crystal Middle School - Laura was saying earlier
that she feels pretty secure in the sub -
[ Steven/homeschool - 66 - 10:49:17 ] Has there been any
experimentation with infra rays as not to
to disturb wildlife?
[ ConnieACCC - 67 - 10:51:31 ] What type of degree must
you have to be able to drive a sub ?
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 68 - 10:55:34 ] For
tomorrow's dive, will you be sending out video and audio?
[ DanRichards - 69 - 10:57:21 ] Sorry I got pulled away
for a bit. Caddy, for information about the Channel Islands, check
the web site for Channel Islands National Park and the National
Marine Sanctuary, this web site has links. As far as protecting
marine life, that gets complicated as many different agencies are
involved including Fish and Game, and the National Marine fisheries
Service.
[ Steven/Brian/Julie/Homeschool - 70 - 10:59:23 ] Thank
you for the oppurtunity to particiapte! We have enjoyed this very
much!
[ David/huenemehighschool - 71 - 11:00:52 ] i have to go
soon
[ Andrea/Ames - 72 - 11:00:59
] Dan, as you can see there are several questions. Please answer
those that you have time for today. If you would like to see
questions asked earler you can use the scroll back function at the
bottom of the screen.
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 73 - 11:01:05 ] Hello again.
Does anyone know if they will be sending video and audio tomorrow?
I am sorry if this has been asked before.
[ DanRichards - 74 - 11:01:18 ] DanaAshe, we study
abalone and many different organisms that live on and around the
islands in order to understand the health of the ecosystem. When a
problem is detected such as declining abalone populations we direct
research to try to determine what the problem is and see if we can
help them recover.
[ Jonathan/Huenemehigh - 75 - 11:01:33 ] Thank you for
all of the information and i look forward to hearing more about this
dives and others in the future.
[ David/huenemehighschool - 76 - 11:01:55 ] thanks for
giving us the info we wanted good bye
[ Andrea/Ames - 77 - 11:02:10
] THANKS FOR JOINING US!
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 78 - 11:02:32 ] How did you
get involved in studing ablone?
[ Saul - 79 - 11:02:46 ] Hi everyone. I am a homeschooler
from NY.
[ Andrea/Ames - 80 - 11:03:08
] RE: [Tim/QuilCedaElementary]
Hello again. Does anyone know if they will be sending video and audio
tomorrow? I am sorry if this has been asked before. We
will not be joining the dive tomorrow -sorry.
[ Robert/NASA/KSC - 81 - 11:03:37 ] This has been a
great experience for us here at Kennedy Space Center. We really
enjoyed listening to the event.
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 82 - 11:04:51 ] Will you be
doing the dive tomorrow at all?
[ George - 84 - 11:07:48 ] Great work. Congratulations to
your whole team. Talk soon
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 85 - 11:08:34 ] What will you
do with the ablone if you find them?
[ DanRichards - 87 - 11:09:43 ] Tim, I'm interested in
most marine life but abalone have been been fascinating subjects.
They have been harvested for many years (infact Indians harvested
them thousands of years ago). California has the greatest diversity
in the world with eight species. White abalone live the deepest,
generally from 80-200 ft. They may live 20-30 years.
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 88 - 11:10:13 ] How long will
the dive last? How many people are there in the sub?
[ Andrea/Ames - 89 - 11:12:05
] Hi all -- Again, thank you for joining us -- We will ask Tom
from the Channel Islands National Park to visit this room when he
returns from the ship and answer some of the remaining questions.
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 90 - 11:12:27 ] Could you
point us to some pictures of ablone? Brandy in my class wants to
know how many young an ablone has at any one time.
[ DanRichards - 91 - 11:12:48 ] tim, we will document the
abalone we see to get a population estimate. We will also note the
location. One possible future project would be a captive breeding
effort, bring in some of these abalone where they can be brought
together for spawning and the young raised in a protected
environment.
[ Lori - 92 - 11:13:21 ] I'm sorry that I'm just able to
join. Is there any way you will rebroadcast? Where can I find what
you done?
[ Andrea/Ames - 93 - 11:13:52
] Tim - could you repeat Brandy's question. You may want to do an
Internet search with your teacher and classmates and see if there
are images of Abalone on the Internet.
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 94 - 11:14:45 ] Mike in my
class would like to know if you need to wear special suits to go in
the sub?
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 95 - 11:15:45 ] Brandy
wanted to know how many young the ablone have at one time.
[ DanRichards - 96 - 11:16:09 ] Tim, there are various
web sites for marine biology with photos of abalone but
unfortunately I don't have the addresses right now. Each abalone can
produce millions of eggs or sperm but in nature very few will
survive the first year.
[ Bill - 97 - 11:16:37 ] I am curious why dolphins and
other sea life would make a differenct in your communications with
the submarine?
[ Saul - 98 - 11:18:35 ] What do you expect to find?
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 99 - 11:18:41 ] How many
people can fit into your sub?
[ DanRichards - 100 - 11:18:48 ] No special suits are
required to go in the sub. On long and deep dives, it might be cold
inside, especially against the walls and condensation from breathing
is a problem sometimes. we generally wear comfortable clothes like
sweat pants and shirt.
[ PeterSaltonstallElementarySalemMA - 101 - 11:19:30
] Peter-Hi, we've just joined you. What is going on?
[ DanRichards - 102 - 11:23:48 ] The Delta sub hold two
people, an observer who lays down on the bottom and a driver who
sits upright int he tower. We are mostly exploring what is there, we
know so little about what lives in the deep. We hope to document
the number and location of white abalone which are in peril.
Dolphin
and other marine animals often communicate wiht sound and those
sounds interact with our communications-just like talking in a room
full of other people talking
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 103 - 11:24:15 ] How large
can abalone get?
[ Andrea/Ames - 104 - 11:24:26
] Peter we have been talking with some folks in a sub - You can
see a copy of the transcript from- quest.arc.nasa.gov/ltc/nps
[ Tim/QuilCedaElementary - 105 - 11:27:37 ] My class is
going out to recess now. THey will be back on after. Thank you so
much for the information and we look forward to talking with you
soon.
[ DanRichards - 106 - 11:29:14 ] Red abalone are the
largest species of abalone in the world and may grow to be over 12
inches long. Most of the others in California only grow to 6-8
inches. They grow at about 1 inch per year for the first few years
then slow down. There are tropical species that may only be 1 inch
long.
[ Andrea/Ames - 108 - 11:38:22
] Thanks Dan - This is Ames signing off.
[ TrishBurns - 123 - 17:06:11 ] I'm a Park Ranger at
Channel Islands National Park. I have logged on to answer some of
the questions from Tuseday that went unanswered. The sub did go
deep enough to see glow in the dark animals. Although none were
seen. The most common place to see boilumienesce is on the surface
at night. The squid the sub saw were the coommon about six inches
is size. They are very common in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Pinnipeds were seen that day, but most were seen near or at the
surface. Light penterates the first 130 feet of water. So there is no
light at 550 feet. The current in the Santa Barbara Channel is
unique. There are two major currents, the California current from
the north is a cold water current and the Davidson current from the
south is a warm water current. The two currents mix in the channel,
which helps contribute to the amount of ocean life seen. The Santa
Barbara Channel is one of the most diverse areas of the ocean
because of those two mixing ocean currents. I will visit this site
one more time if there are any other questions. I will visit on the
evening of Oct 27. Thanks for joining us on Tuesday.
[ TomDore - 124 - 10:20:47 ] This has been a very
exciting and educational event for everyone involved. We'd like to
keep this site open and plan for future chats and our next sub dive.
Was this fun? Should we broadcast another sub dive and
include "real" video next time? Should we explore some more ocean
ecosystems around Channel Islands National Park?
Give us your comments!
Ranger Tom
[ Andrea/Ames - 125 - 12:31:49
] Thank you Tom!
