Bio - Bill Taylor
I knew that I wanted to be a scientist since I was in grade school when
I was interested in astronomy and rockets. I even vaguely remember writing
a letter to someone in the government (not NASA, this was even before there
was a NASA!) in about fourth grade with some ideas I had for rocket propulsion.
My interest continued in grade school and high school until I took my first
physics class.
A wonderful teacher, Mr. Bajema, at Benson Technical High School in
Portland, Oregon cemented my interest in science in general and in physics,
specifically. Then I knew that I was going to be a physicist! Little did
I know what that meant - lots more time in school.
Even though I've spent many years learning about physics and math and
other disciplines, I've enjoyed every minute of it, including many years
in college and graduate school. And I'm still learning - a practicing
scientist is always learning. As a matter of fact, isn't that what we
do all throughout our lives, continue to learn - about life, our professions,
and our hobbys?
I have two roles as a part of the IMAGE Team. The first is a science
co-investigator where I have the interest - and the priviledge! - of being
on the Radio Plasma Imager (RPI) Team. The RPI is a radar and we will
use it to image the magnetosphere. The second is an education and public
outreach co-investigator. My love of education and my conviction that
science education is critical for the future of our country and the world
has grown through the years. I'm involved with many education activites,
including an organization that I started with Bill Pine and others 10
years ago called INSPIRE.
I look forward to talking to you on the IMAGE QuestChat!
