Bio
- Marcus Bursik,
SRTM Team Member
Marcus Bursik is Associate Professor of Geology at the State University
of New York at Buffalo. He earned his Ph.D. at the California Institute
of Technology in 1988 where his thesis topic was the Late Quaternary Volcano-Tectonic
Evolution of the Mono Basin, Eastern California. After completing post-doctoral
research at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom he returned to Pasadena,
California to work at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
His SRTM science investigation looks at the islands in Mono Lake, California
and the warping of the lake shorelines by volcanic activity and by faulting
of the Sierra Nevada. Using SRTM data in conjunction with data from JPL's
Airborne Topographic Radar, and the Global Positioning System, he hopes
to be able to paint a picture of the warping of the shoreline caused by
volcanic eruptions and earthquakes over tens of thousands of years, down
to hundreds of years.
