[ Keli/NASAChatHost - 2 - 10:02:23 ]
Good Morning, The webcast with Chris Mckay will begin at 10:00 a.m. Be sure to ask your questions during the lecture. You will here them answered live and can listen to the responses using your RealPlayer. Chris is now taking questions on the air.

[ Rose - 3 - 10:10:48 ]
You said "as Mars got cold and dry". Why woudl that have happened?

[ AbelMendez/UPRArecibo - 4 - 10:17:42 ]
How does life change the nitrogen history?

[ AbelMendez/UPRArecibo - 5 - 10:17:42 ]
I'm a biophysicist working in the field of planetary microbial ecology. I'm studying the growth dynamics of microorganisms under low temp and press environments. I will like to know what's the history of nitrogen on Earth as compare to Mars.

[ Rose - 6 - 10:17:42 ]
If Mars got warmer, you said it would once again have liquid water. Where would that come from? Asteroids like before?

[ Keli/NASAChatHost - 7 - 10:27:32 ]
Hope you two got your answers on the air! If not, you can review the Real Media or Real Audio when it is archived.

[ Keli/NASAChatHost - 8 - 10:38:58 ]
After the broadcast lecture, we encourage you to ask further questions in the chat room.

[ Keli/NASAChatHost - 9 - 10:40:12 ]
We hope you will give us feedback on the lecture series at http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/ltc/survey.html

[ Rose - 10 - 10:43:02 ]
I had to go but now I'm back. I got my answers on-air. It was so cool. another question. I heard Chris talk about Europa. Is there any reason to think that there aren't large fish/animals/life swimming on Europa. Like Jupiter-fish? Did Chris cover that?

[ don/westlake - 11 - 10:46:01 ]
Do you think if there was life on Mars, would it evolve beond the mico-organisim stage?

[ Rose - 12 - 10:46:01 ]
How can we tell if there is oxygen on Europa? What do most scientists think about oxygen on Europa?

[ AbelMendez/UPRArecibo - 13 - 10:53:34 ]
I share your hypothesis of life is just fine with 1/3 gravity. I think that a more important factor is the environment press and temp (decided in part by surface gravity) which affects the metabolic reaction and diffusion rates. So maybe an approach to also test in Earth based labs for 1/3 gravity effects is to grow microorganisms under the equivalent press and temp for an 1/3 gravity Earth.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 14 - 10:57:03 ]
Hi, we will be taking a short break, but Chris will be in the chat room shortly.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 15 - 11:02:42 ]
Chris here: I agree and Temp and Pressure can be simulated here on Earth. We're doing some of these experiments now.

[ Oran/NASAChatHost - 16 - 11:05:13 ]
Sorry for the pause. We'd like to thank Chris McKay for sharing his time and also Netscape for sponsoring this event. Please let us know what you think by filling out the survey on the main Astrobiology Lecture Series page.

[ Keli/NASAChatHost - 18 - 11:52:54 ]
RE: [AbelMendez/UPRArecibo] I'm working on growing bacteria under low pressure (1 bar to 1/100 bar) and low temp (300 K to 250 K). What kind of experiments are you doing? Any references?
Abel, if you're still here, Dr. McKay had left when you asked about references. If you'd like, please e-mail me your e-mail address and question and I will see if he can write back to you. I am at ksato@k12-dev.arc.nasa.gov
