LFS Student Summary -Written by fifth/sixth grade class Hydesville School, Hydesville, Ca. We learned that KAO stands for Kuiper Airborne Observatory. We learned that there is an airplane that flies with a telescope for astronomers to work out of. We learned how the telescopes' temperature needs to be controlled for good images. The images taken by the telescope are taken in infrared. We learned that Jupiter is "almost" a star as it is a ball of gas. We learned thatJupiter travels around the sun once in every 12 years. We saw Saturn through the telescope and saw the rings. We saw M57 which the KAO saw (Ring Nebulae). We saw the planet Jupiter through the telescope and 4 of its moons lined up. We learned how telescopes operate and drew pictures of them. We drew pictures and made models of the outside and the inside of the telescope of the KAO. We learned that different light sources have different spectrums. We did experiments with diffraction gratings and different lights. We learned that you get high in the atmosphere to record infrared radiation. We learned that the KAO flies in the stratosphere to get above the water vapor in our atmosphere. We did an experiment with colored paper and thermometers and learned that dark objects absorb more heat and white objects reflect the light. When it was light outside the astronomer put pieces of white paper in front of the telescope and showed us the sun and it's spots. We didn't see Jupiters' clouds but we could see ziggly lines. ---------- Ginny Dexter Email:dext4700@spacelink.msfc.nasa.gov .
