Below are a few star counting stories my student wrote. Marilyn Wall John Wayland Elementary Bridgewater, Virginia *************************** Counting the Stars Sometimes when I have been out late at night, I wondered how many stars were in the sky. Now my teacher was going to show us how to count the stars with a special star counter and a protractor. When I got home, I told my brother Lucas about it. He said, "Cool." When my dad got home, I told him about it too. I asked him if he would take me out to count the stars. About 9:30 pm me and my dad went up on a huge hill in front of the Mennonite church. There were no other houses around. And we were above the lights, so of course we could really see the stars above us. My dad said he felt like a real live scientist, studying the stars. I guess I felt like one too. What an exciting day! Rachel 4th grade John Wayland Elementary Bridgewater, Virginia Counting the Stars The night I looked at my stars was my birthday. I had been out to dinner for my birthday, and it was too late to go anywhere but my backyard to count the stars. My mom was there with me to help. I looked north, south, east, and west. I looked at the different degrees in each direction. I saw the most stars at 60 degrees. My grand total was 36 stars. I didn't see many stars because of the street lights and the full moon. I thought it was neat to look at the stars. My mom and I wished it was darker so we could see more stars. Star counting was a good way to end my birthday. Matthew 4th grade John Wayland Elementary The Fabulous, Outrageous, and Like No Other Star Count! That night about 8:15 my brother and I went out into the front yard to count the stars. I had to take my brother because he just bugged me. Then I lost my star counter in the dark so I went back inside and asked my dad to help me make another one. Then my dad came outside and we started to count the stars. There were very few stars. The stars were like elephants being chased by mice, so there weren't may stars. The total number of stars I saw with my star counter was 12! The stars were very cool. I am glad I did the star count. I thought it was neat and fun. Genita 4th grade John Wayland Elementary Staying Up Late to Count the Stars It was 8:00 p.m. and my mom said it was time for me to do my homework. I got my stuff to do the star count and went outside with my mom into our front yard. There sure weren't many stars out. I was glad to do this homework because I rarely get to stay up late. I put my star counter up to 30 degrees and I found a lot of stars. Then I put it up to 45 degrees and didn't find as many stars. Finally I put the counter up to 66 degrees and there was a lot of stars. My mom liked doing this with me. After I was done counting the stars I had to go to bed. While I laid in bed, I thought of what fun I had. I couldn't wait until the next time we count the stars through our star counter again. Vanessa 4th grade John Wayland Elementary
