QUESTION: How many and what are the different instruments that HST has got (e.g.: a spectrometer, etc...)? Answer from Jeffrey Hayes on April 15, 1996: Hello, Currently on HST there are 5 science instruments: The Wide-Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) for imaging; the Faint Object Camera (FOS) which uses different types of detectors to image faint objects; the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) which is used for looking at bright star in great detail; the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) to look a faint stars and galaxies in low detail; and Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS) to measure the positions of stars very accurately. In 1997 the 2 spectrographs will be replaced by 2 new instruments that will concentrate on the infra-red part of the spectrum.
