Friday, October 20, 7:23 A.M. (PDT) - Some glimmer of good news received yesterday. Although I am not privy to the exact failure analysis operations, rumors (which can be very dangerous) are that perhaps there has not been a total failure of the tape recorder. In the next day or two (perhaps today) JPL will try to playback 30 seconds of tape from the tape recorder to see if the tape is still intact. We may not get data - if the tape heads are touching the leader. But if we get any rewind at all then I interpret that as meaning the tape is still in one piece and all is not lost.
