QUESTION: What precautions have been made to protect the probe from the possiblity of being struck by Jupiter lightning? ANSWER from Daniel Carlock on January 5, 1995: The Probe was not explicitly designed to survive a direct lightning strike. However, stringent design and test requirements were levied upon the Probe in terms of resistance to electromagnetic interference (EMI), provision of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and minimization of susceptibility to electro-static discharge (ESD) as the descent module passed through Jupiter's atmosphere. Information regarding the presence or absence of Jovian lightning, and consequently whether or not the Probe was ever in close proximity to lightning during its descent mission, cannot be released at this time. These details will be released at the upcoming Probe post-encounter press conference (to be rescheduled following resumption of normal NASA business.
