QUESTION: Will there be another chance for an Io flyby? Perhaps at the end of the mission? ANSWER from Leslie Tamppari on January 10, 1996: There is some discussion about another chance for an Io flyby at the end of the nominal mission or perhaps during a potential extended mission. This is one topic that will be discussed by the Project Science Group at a meeting at the end of January. Many people feel that Io is so important that we should flyby again, but there are some risks. One risk is the extreme radiation environment at Io's distance from Jupiter. Our spacecraft was designed to go in that close only once, and another time may result in severe damage to the computer and other systems on board the spacecraft. Another open issue is whether or not we have enough propellant on board to adjust the orbit to go in that close to Io again. Still another is whether or not, given the uncertainties mentioned above, it is worth possibly giving up the last two nominal orbits to achieve another Io flyby, or to bet on extended mission funding. We may know how this issue will be resolved in the next several months after more discussion and analysis.
