QUESTION: Do you have any idea what the probe will find in relation to Jupiter radiating more energy than it receives? ANSWER from Robert Mitchell: One instrument on the probe called the net flux radiometer was for the purpose of measuring both the incoming and upcoming energy flux over the altitude range measured by the probe. However, due to re-radiation of energy within the atmosphere, energy coming from above the probe isn't all solar input, and energy coming up isn't necessarily of Jupiter origin. However, it will tell us what the energy flow patterns are in the part of the atmosphere we measured. More generally, when all of the probe data have been studied and analyzed, it is likely that we will have better models of the internal structure and dynamics of Jupiter, and this should lead to new ideas about exactly how the energy radiated by Jupiter is generated.
