QUESTION: Whats going on now (January 9, 1996)?? My friends at JPL say you have some significant findings. We should be deeply emersed in all kind of cool new findings. Why are you keeping this from the public?? Why haven't they been released?? Has the government shutdown crippled you that bad?? ANSWER from Charlie Sobeck on January 10, 1996: Unfortunately, the federal government shutdown has delayed the release of the Galileo Probe data. The first public release of results had been scheduled for December 19, 1995, but this event was not deemed to be essential to government operations (that is, not necessary for the protection of public health or property). A tentative target of January 9, 1996 was missed when the government shutdown continued longer than expected and it is now expected that the initial results will be released in late January, before the end of the latest continuing resolution. Those of us working on the Galileo Project (in many cases for 15, 20 years or more) are deeply frustrated over the delay and are continuing to make every effort to release the results as soon as possible.
