Farming in Space / NASA Quest Forums

Fall 2001

Forum 1: Oct. 8-12, Gearing up for planting!
Forum 2: Oct. 29 - Nov. 2, Let's talk about data!

Spring 2002

Forum 1: Feb. 11-15, Gearing up again and experiment adaptions!
Forum 2: Mar. 4-8, More on data!

Opportunities for teachers and students to participate in the Farming in Space activities include the following four areas:

Research Activities:

Conduct the Farming in Space activity as part of your science class, club, or for a science project. Investigations can be completed within 21 to 100 days depending upon the questions you choose to research.

Try out the Plant Production Simulator, a free demo from the award-winning BioBLAST CD-ROM. This simulator can be used to model the growth of wheat and other advanced life-support crops.

Web Events:

Get started with the ISS Plant Research WebQuest. In this futuristic problem scenario, student teams will gather data to support plant research on the International Space Station.

Participate in forums with NASA Experts and other schools via this NASA Quest Web site. See the schedule above for dates and descriptions of the forums.

Live Lab Cam:

Check out the LIVE Lab Cam to see how the plants in our laboratory are growing. Once the related wheat experiment is underway on the Space Station, images of the growing plants will be posted on the ISS Challenge Web site.

Collaboration:

Share data, images, spin-off investigations, and results with other teachers and students around the world. How can can you get involved in collaboration? If you'd like, synchronize with our Oct. 9, 2001 or our Feb. 12, 2002 start up. Join the forum

Throughout the activity, students can e-mail the ISS Challenge team to ask questions and receive guidance.

International Space Station Challenge™ is a Web-based curriculum supplement for students in grades 9 to 12. Additional plant science and engineering activities as well as computer-based simulations are available that link to Space Station research.
