Dear, Journal

We are still in the water headed for ice station Sheba. It is very cold outside. We are coming across some ice that we have to go through. It doesn't look that bad. I was told that this is nothing compared to what lies ahead.

I awoke this morning and I couldn't find anyone. I was told that they were linking up the portable on the flying bridge. The ship's satellite is now completely down and the captain needed a reading from the web for the location of the Sheba ice station. The Sheba workstation is on a floating ice burg and the location of it changes every day. I helped out with printing out the web page. Because of this information the captain made a new direction, I feel like we really helped them out a lot. Because the link is not being connected easily lately, we might have to set our portable up and down load things that way.

By the time we were setting up we happened to be coming up on some ice that looked really big. I was really excited on how it would feel going over ice burgs. It isn't that bumpy. I was also told that later in the trip, when we come upon thicker ice burgs the ride would get worse all day and all night. That is going to be an interesting experience.

I spent most of my day updating my journal. Around three O'clock they called out over pipe that there were polar bears off the port bow, (left side of the ship). So we all rushed out there to take pictures but we just couldn't see them. We had hamburgers for lunch. It was really good. Probably the best meal so far I had on this ship. One of the Coast Guard members told me that for fun when they are going over ice burgs they sit up on the flying bridge and when the ship drives up onto the ice it feels like the ship is going to tip over when it breaks through the ice. I don't think I will be experiencing this sensation.:)
