Day one on the Polar Star
Damien Canerot
July 22, 1998

On Wednesday it was a hectic day. I woke up around six in the morning and finished all of my packing. Around 10 or so I arrived at the airport. I put on my NASA jacket and said my final good-byes to my mother and the rest of my family. My mother was crying since this would be the last time I'd see her for a little over 5 weeks. Around an hour or so later from departure we arrived in Seattle Washington. We got a taxi and went to the Seattle port for the Polar Star. As we entered the gateway for the entrance of the port I saw the huge red and white coast guard ship. I was really excited at this time about all the things to come in this trip. We then unpacked our baggage in these rooms we were going to share. Our room has four beds, a couple lockers, and a sink. Also we have our own toilet which is unlike most of the other rooms which are quite a bit smaller.

We then unloaded all of our computer equipment that we'll be using during our trip for Internet access. One of our main concerns on Wednesday was to get the router connection working for the Polar Star. We had our portable router working for our INMAR SAT and all we needed was to get a connection for when we were stationed onboard the ship. There was a lot of trouble shooting and work that we were doing. This day we worked until the sun had gone down and many hours after that. Later that night around ten or eleven, me and the other two NASA students, Jamie & Seth relaxed and just played a couple board games. We then called it a night. I had many crazy dreams that night about all of the things to come.
