August 7, 1998

I woke up at 5:30 this morning for a live event with Terry Tucker. Terry is the person in charge for the SHEBA project. We set up all of our equipment on the top look out deck. It was pretty cold since we were reaching the arctic and it was still morning time. The Polar Star's Satellite wasn't working so we got our portable INMAR SAT and I set it up on a stool. I had to change it's position with the motion and turning of the ship. The livemedia broadcast went very well. I ended up missing breakfast because we were still interviewing Terry at the time. After the interview and broadcast I went straight for my bed because the previous night I went to bed at about 2 in the morning. And having a 3-¸ hours rest wasn't my idea of a goodnight sleep. I was completely passed out, when I was awakened to find out there was a drill for abandon ship. I slept right through the bell and alarm but luckily Mark woke me up. I went to the designated spot were I was supposed to be if the ship happened to be sinking. There were about 10 different locations for people onboard to go to in case of this emergency. There were lifeboats for each section with life jackets and everything. I ended up missing lunch now because I slept right through it

After that I relaxed. Seth, Mark and myself played a board game of Risk because we had to let time pass by. I ended up watching a movie at around 1 in the morning with the NASA crew and a couple of NAVY guys who are also onboard the ship. Before I went to bed at around 2:30 or so I noticed that It was still light outside and you could see the moon hiding behind the clouds and the light from the sun beneath the horizon.
