August 25, 1998

Today I woke up early without having any sleep the previous night. There was a lot going on today because the ROV was going to be sent into the ocean. The divers were getting ready to go diving, to help the ROV into the water. There were Coasties in the boats and so many things were going on.

All of the equipment for controlling the ROV and all of our equipment for recording the event was out on the side of the ship. The Polar Stars satellite was not working so we had to hook up the portable satellite and Jamie and myself were holding the satellite about half of the time. The rest of the time I was working on transmitting real audio and video. We interviewed Michele Hope and also we recorded the event of sending out the ROV. We recorded the view from the eyes of the ROV as it searched through the ocean for a sunken ship. I am not even sure where we are at this time because the location of our ship is confidential at this moment.

The lunch was fairly good. It was some kind of chicken dish witch I enjoyed eating. Right after lunch I went back to work and making sure that any video coverage of the ROV was recorded and encoded onto the computer. We stored a lot of the info and video on real media so that we could send out the important clips later. Aaron had a box that he used to control the ROV. It was sort of like a detailed video game. He had controls, which moved the ROV up, down, side to side, right or left. There was also a monitor, which showed the view of the ROV the entire time. We saw some starfish at the bottom of the sea and also some formations, which could be from a shipwreck. We are not sure at this moment whether or not if it was from a shipwreck or some other causes.

From morning until the late evening we were out there working with transmitting and then finally packing up all of the equipment. There are only a couple of more days left before we go back to Barrow and from there take a couple of flights back to California. I miss some things that I have back at home so IÕm looking forward to arriving back to the bay area.
