SHIP'S POSITION: Sediment trap site north of Hugo Island
REMARKS: The Polar Duke completed the 600 transect early this morning. This
afternoon we did a BOPS cast and 2M net trawl over the Hugo Island sediment
trap site. The ship is now proceeding to Arthur Harbor to run the 3.7km
picket line which consists of bird observations and a bioacoustics profile.
This will be followed by trawling during evening hours.
We were in radio and visual contact with a Japanese research vessel this
morning engaged in geoseismic work.

SHIP'S POSITION: Palmer Basin

REMARKS: The Polar Duke returned to Palmer Basin by late afternoon of the
18th to begin the 3.7km picket line which consists of continuous bioacoustic
profiling to detect krill swarms, and associated avian observations from
the bridge. Picket lines are radial arcs extending 3.7km and 10km out from
a center (in this case the center being Palmer Station).
On the 19th, BOPS casts were performed at nearshore stations B-J. During
this time two avian ecologists from S-013 deployed to Torgesen Island at
0430 LT to observe the times of departure of Adelie penguins to begin their
feeding offshore. At 0630 LT, two Zodiacs were deployed from the ship to
track the departing penguins and note their travel paths and diving patterns.
Three ASA support personnel from Palmer Station and Dr. Polly Penhale, NSF
representative, came aboard in the morning to observe operations and render
technical advice on some troubled instrumentation.
Calm weather allowed penguin tracking to continue all day under ideal conditions.

SHIP'S POSITION: Palmer Basin
REMARKS: The Polar Duke is performing a high density grid today within the
penguin foraging area. This consists of continuous avian observations and
Bioacoustics profiling for krill detection. Included in this grid are several
BOPS casts and XBT drops. Targeted trawls will be performed this evening
which are intended to capture high densities of krill as determined from
the Bioacoustics profile. This combination of krill density from Bioacoustics,
targeted trawls and avian observations help create a picture of pengin foraging
behavior.

SHIP'S POSITION: Palmer Basin
REMARKS: The Polar Duke completed the high density grid in the penguin foraging
area last evening. Targeted trawls were performed thereafter. Today the
vessel is running two bioacoustic profiles from stations A-E (within Arthur
Harbor and extending offshore). Two Zodiacs are tracking penguins as directed
by avian ecologists who landed on Humble Island at 0230 LT this morning.
The Polar Duke will tie up at Palmer Station this afternoon at 1600 LT in
preparation for the Live From Antarctica broadcast to be filmed and aired
at 1800 GMT tomorrow.
